U.S.-China Trade Negotiations:
As trade talks continue, let’s reflect on what happened since last October’s U.S.-China meeting.
A year long trade truce was announced and China committed to purchasing roughly 12 million tons of soybeans by the end of 2025. This never happened.
China imported about 1.4 million tons in November and December. The Trump admin then said “end of the year” meant “end of the growing season” which was around the end of February 2026. This never happened.
China imported about 7 million tons Nov-Feb and even including March we are at 9.2 million tons.
There’s two takeaways from this. The first is that commitments to buy something are not comparable to real purchases. Trade deals only matter if they’re followed through on. The second is that centrally planning imports and exports doesn’t work out too well. Leave it to the markets.

Roy: A friend in a suburban red county here did a poll in their school and said what language is spoken at home? Spanish was number one. Farsi was number two. Other languages number three, and English number four. This is what we're dealing with in Texas right now.
