Wendy and I bought our home in Killara in 1983 for $118,000. She was flying with Ansett, I was at the bank. We saved the deposit in just under two years. The agent reckons it's worth about $3.2 million now but we'd never sell, too many memories. I don't understand why young people say it's impossible. We weren't on big money. We just had discipline 🏡

have been in discussions with the famous @auboomers couple steve and wendy about purchasing their house at killara for approx ~ 3 million dollars. in cash. me and my brother split. they almost gave it up to us. then i went on to review this whole case, it’s kind of f*ked up for me and my brother to be spamming this sweet couple for this house which we would’ve wrote a cheque for the second they agree upon the deal haha. i do think the real f*cked up part is the fact that we were actually serious about this purchase, from a literal x tweet posted 6 hours ago. so stop beating around the bush steve/wendy whoever’s on the account atm let me know and let’s settle on something, even if it’s nothing.

@LeslieDixon1952 That's the difference between our generation and the current, we didn't complain from our smart phones, we got on with it and made it work.

My little home in the Cotswolds. I was in the salon when we bought this for £25,000. Brian had just started as a foreman with British Steel. I don't know what it's worth now. It's just our little home. I don't know why young people are struggling. They just need to give it a go 🇬🇧

@Bathory_1560 @BigDog_USA We have equity across 7 properties. This is a business, not a charity. Our children have every opportunity that we did and we encourage them to seize them! - Steve

@taipan168 @ukboomers Margaret blocked us. Wendy says it's tall poppy syndrome. We didn't realise owning 7 properties in Sydney was controversial. In Australia we call that a modest portfolio. Perhaps things are different in England. We wish them well. 🇦🇺

@mikjcal 4-7% rates would have given us an unfair advantage, those entering today have it better than the 17% we were dealt. Hard times indeed.

@auboomers its not possible anymore. House prices in 1980s were 3-5 times of Average Annual Salary. Now its anywhere from 15-18 average annual salaries. Savings are not possible especially if you are on average income.

@BigDog_USA Couldn't agree more mate. My son makes $95,000 a year and is still renting. If he would just cut back on the cafe brekkies, he'd be on the ladder.

@auboomers You don't understand! There's Bali holidays, boats, and jetski's to pay for!! My mother always said to me to struggle and sacrifice when I was young. I did exactly that and retired at 50. Unfortunately, "sacrifice" is not a word that most of the younger generations know. ~

@auboomers Median FT earning in 1983 was 21k. If you both earned the median, your house was 3.3x average earnings. For a young person today to have the same buying advantage your home should sell for 3.3x average wage which is 110. Your home should sell for 743k.

@auboomers Best to get one of those cheap lockboxes to save some dough too. Put it somewhere prominent - like in the middle of any common property so other tenants are inconvenienced. Air BnB comes first!

We chose to not renew the lease with our tenants on our 7th investment property because we have discovered that we can list this property on AirBnB and earn over 2.5x more than the rental income. Property is the asset that never stops giving.

You have to ask yourself the question… Why is Australia hiking interest rates so aggressively compared to other first world nations? The Reserve Bank of New Zealand is holding a policy meeting today and is likely to keep interest rates on hold. #ausbiz
