@SandyofCthulhu The world has no patience anymore. Need that dopamine hit immediately. It’s a little sad. Although usually in a book you can tell if the build up is worth it pretty early by writing quality.

A friend recommended the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. I complained about it later, saying I'd read 100 pages and nothing happened. He said, "It gets better in another 200 pages." I never read any more, so I don't know if he was right. I don't want to earn the right to enjoy a book. Whether I was right about Robert Jordan, this definitely applies to games. A game must be fun RIGHT AWAY. Yes, the early game may have a restricted choice, but those choices should still be good. When you fire up Age of Empires, you have a town center, three villagers, and some resources. What do you do? Find sheep? Hunt deer? Seek berries? Build a house? You have choices. At the start of Cthulhu Wars (my boardgame) you have 6 cultists and a gate. The first two things everyone does is move a cultist and build a gate. But where do you move that cultist? Where do you build that gate? What's your third move? Another cultist? Summon a monster? Try for a spellbook? Games are about interesting decisions that matter.
