Should I refrain from making any posts or comments here for 40 days from tonight for Lent?

@businessposthq @DeclanBurke2 Absolutely. Scam tax should never have been applied. However we are beholden to Brussels. They allow us or not. That's wrong too.

@Niall_Boylan @RichieHayes2 Niall, you're a great and shrewd mind but I've quickly come to the conclusion that, given the world situation, we need to take in as much oil as we can. In a few months there may genuinely be none. These protestors are looking for short term gain, granted, but it's a long game.

It’s almost like the Government want this protest to escalate across the whole country. This is not just about farmers and fuel anymore, it’s about a complete lack of competence, compassion and understanding Irish politicians have for the people of Ireland. They will refuse to help the Irish people while giving away billions around Europe and the world.
TheJournal Politics@TJ_Politics

Donal Byrne and John Dallon said they expected to be in today’s netting. They say now the protests will continue.

Not sure that Irish public know that at a time of global fossil fuel crisis IRL may turn away tankers & offer them to the global markets & that the refinery will run out of storage so again may turn away supplies. Protesters have every right to protest but not harm the country

@DavQuinn Do you support these people blocking ports? Everything we need to function as a society so that they get a few cent off the diesel? Are they elected to run the country? Are they the law? I predict violence if they don't cop on. Very soon.

I see the truckers and farmers are now being painted as the pawns of malign outside influences. That's the most pathetic cope yet.

Just happened at Inver Clane My son and the guy in the Hi-Viz had to step in and stop a guy grabbing the diesel pump off the lady filling her car. He cornered her and tried to grab the pump....she ended up covered in diesel. This is getting out of hand.

'We are the voice of the people of Ireland.' After being denied entry to a government meeting to discuss fuel prices, fuel protest leaders voiced their frustrations with the ongoing situation.

Farming and haulage groups have been told this afternoon the Government does have a package of supports ready, but it will not be announced until the blockade is lifted.

I'm shocked the government has been so docile with the blockaders. It's past time the ports were reopened. When people start dying, and yes another week of this and they will, the protestors are FULLY responsible. Everyone. Get the army in now. One chance to leave. Then clear it.

@RealEddieHobbs @KieranAH They need to open the ports. It may get violent but I'm telling you it's critical now. These people have to stand down. An oil tanker is on the verge of leaving Galway. These idiots don't realise we all don't want suicide.

My information is that the Reps were denied access to the meeting & that the Garda Public Order Unit is on site at Whitegate Refinery - awaiting orders. That fearful of the public reaction dropped the army idea but the intention is to crush them and anyone who follows.

EDDIE HOBBS: In Ireland, farmers, truckers, and bus drivers have literally closed the country. They are blocking streets protesting government taxes on fuel, saying they can't take it anymore. The actual legitimacy of the state is being tested by the people. @RealEddieHobbs

@MaryLouMcDonald Exactly who is representing this group? They're holding the country hostage now. They need to stop blockading as a first step. People are talking to the government who'll get a deal that will apply to these as well. Why are they not standing down until the outcome?

What on earth are Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael doing locking the protesters out of the talks, talks that are meant to be about addressing the fuel crisis.   They  are making an absolute shambles of things - escalating this crisis instead of doing their job. They need to lift the phone, engage with the protesters and hear what they have to say.  The priority has to be ending the protests, getting fuel prices down and doing this as quickly as possible.

@MarioNawfal Unfortunately we signed away our oil drilling rights to private interests decades ago. The most underhand corrupt decision of a very corrupt man at the time. We don't have huge amounts there and it's difficult ocean remote oil. Now we are dependent on the gulf.

🇮🇪 Ireland just called in the army. Not because of a terrorist attack or a natural disaster. Because of the price of diesel. Truckers and farmers have been blocking highways, ports and the country's only oil refinery for days. The Irish government already cut fuel taxes. Protesters say it’s not enough. A war that started in the Persian Gulf has now brought tractors onto the streets of County Wexford. Source: NYT

🇺🇸🇮🇷🇴🇲 The Strait of Hormuz usually moves 20% of the world’s oil. Right now, 600+ vessels are stuck, including 325 tankers. Only 6 ships got through Thursday vs 135 before. That’s a 95% drop. Oil prices are getting repriced globally. Supply chains are already shifting. Longer routes, higher costs, delays everywhere. Insurance pulled back too. Lloyd's of London paused war risk cover on March 5. No cover means ships don’t move, even if the route is technically open. Asia is taking the hit first. 84% of this oil was going there. China gets about a third from here. Japan, South Korea, India all exposed. Europe’s tied in too with 12–14% of LNG coming through. Markets aren’t waiting. Prices are moving on fear alone. International Energy Agency is pushing out 400 million barrels, with the U.S. adding 172 million. That’s roughly 16 days of normal flow. After that, pressure builds fast. Other routes don’t fix it. Cape of Good Hope adds 10–14 days and ~25% more cost. Pipelines can’t carry this load. Everything was built on Hormuz staying open. Right now, that assumption is under pressure.
