Parenti talks about this in his famous “yellow” lecture. Denial of education and literacy is denial of a full existence, of dignity and opportunity, of one’s very humanity. The less you know about the world, and the less you can learn on your own, the easier you are to control.

Beyond the arguments, it’s just really sad that most people in this country, from kids to adults, can’t and don’t read. Literacy is so essential to a dignified and intelligent life, and there used to be a national push for it not too long ago. And now it’s damn near gone.

An HIV-positive man with colon cancer, unable to work for four years, lived in his Los Angeles apartment for almost 25 years.
He says he mailed his rent on time. The landlord said the check never arrived and filed for eviction.
After a trial, a jury ruled he DID mail the payment, but since it wasn't cashed, they said he failed to pay on time.
A judge ordered him out. Sheriff's deputies escorted him from his home of a quarter-century.
He took his dog, Simba, and his clothes. He left behind his furniture, his blankets, his two TVs, and his beloved Madonna CDs.
He's now homeless, sleeping on a friend's sofa.
The system will evict a dying man over a payment dispute.
But a corporation can squat in bankruptcy court for years? "That's a different matter entirely."

Central and South America are not playing with white people anymore. As a whole. When we were headed to Guatemala the State Dept. said to be careful taking photos at random w/ kids around and it’s because western white people and missionaries have a history of kidnapping kids down there for adoption.
