It’s ironic that Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman harps on about bank defaulters and collaborators of the “fascist regime” when Mohammad Obaidul Karim, the chairman of Orion Group, holds 12.8% shares of the newspaper. If one is not aware of who Obaidul Karim and Orion Group are, I’m giving you a refresher: - He embezzled around Tk 700 crore from Oriental Bank, in which he had acquired 83% stakes at the time of the scam. He, with the assistance of two bank officials, opened a fake account in 2005 at Oriental Bank's principal branch with a deposit of Tk 75,000. The account was opened under the name of one Bellal Hossain, who did not exist. Through that account, around Tk 700 crore was siphoned out. The bank could not recover from this scam and had to be sold to Swiss ICB Financial Group, which renamed it to ICB Islamic Bank. The bank is yet to recover from that blow 20 years on. - He has a travel ban and ongoing ACC case over alleged embezzlement of Tk 507 crore from Mercantile Bank. His bank accounts have been frozen too. - During the Awami League rule, Orion became a massive conglomerate along with Summit, Beximco, Bashundhara, Nassa, S Alam. Using his connection with Sheikh Hasina, he managed the contract to build Hanif Flyover and six power plants. He became so brazen under Awami League that he sought a $906.7 million loan from foreign exchange reserves to build a coal-fired power plant — something that was unheard of then. - Orion is a major bank defaulter and beneficiary of capacity charges. Its outstanding loans is close to Tk 14,000 crore and it has filed a petition against another Tk 10,135 crore loans with the High Court. - Obaidul Karim bought more than one foreign passports by laundering money abroad (well Mahmudur himself invested in Turkish passport). You could say that Obaidul Karim walked so that the likes of S Alam, Beximco, Nassa could run.

Sheikh Hasina awarded Adani in India the contract to supply power to #Bangladesh. Following that precedent, @trahmanbnp is now moving toward contracts that would send imported crude oil to a refinery in #India for processing. Many people describe #Pakistan as an oppressor, yet more than six decades ago Pakistan established the Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL) in what is now Bangladesh. Since then, no major refinery has been built by Bangladeshi or Bengali nationalist governments. During the British era, jute grown in East Bengal was shipped to Kolkata for processing in its jute mills. A similar pattern is emerging again with crude oil: instead of importing crude oil at lower prices and refining it domestically in Bangladesh, the proposal is to send it to India for refining and then repurchase the refined fuel at a much higher cost that includes India’s profit margin. We know that ERL currently processes only light-to-medium crude and is unable to handle heavier grades. The government should move on a war footing to establish the planned second unit, ERL-2, enabling the refinery to process a much broader range of crude types, including heavier grades. During the Pakistan era, East Pakistan’s jute industry expanded rapidly. Within only two decades, the number of jute mills in East Pakistan exceeded those in West Bengal, and many of those mills were equipped with machinery more advanced than that used in the Indian state’s mills. Most of the mill owners in our country were Bengalis from East Pakistan rather than West Pakistanis. After Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, however, India stripped East Pakistan’s mills of their modern machinery. Some mills, such as Adamjee Jute Mills, had been owned by migrant communities. At a time when the jute industry in East Pakistan was thriving in much the same way Bangladesh’s garment industry thrives today, the industry in independent Bangladesh eventually declined. A major reason for that collapse was that large amounts of machinery were allegedly removed from the mills and taken to India.

An Indian🚀missile in Bangladeshi airspace — sovereignty violation or not? Bangladesh borders India on three sides, operates aging Soviet-era jets, and has no ground-based missile systems. The asymmetry is stark. Dhaka can protest diplomatically. A military response? That’s a different conversation entirely.

Honestly, reading this, Bangladesh’s Gen Z movement didn’t “fail” because they weren’t passionate or brave – they clearly toppled a dictator. Nepal’s youth got smart: they didn’t try to start a brand‑new party from scratch. Instead, they joined an existing, well‑organized party (the RSP) that already had grassroots reach. They also held elections six months after the protests, while the spirit was still alive. Bangladesh's context got complex — We waited a year and a half and by then, the momentum had fizzled. Worse, the new National Citizens’ Party (NCP) made alliance with Jamaat‑e‑Islami – a conservative, divisive force. That move alienated their own base, especially young women and secular supporters. Meanwhile, the old guard (BNP and Jamaat) just painted themselves as “reformers” and soaked up the anti‑establishment vote. So it wasn’t about Gen Z being weaker in Bangladesh. It was about organisational naivety, a failed coalition, and letting too much time pass. Nepal’s Gen Z played politics; Bangladesh’s Gen Z stayed protesters a bit too long.... bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
