This 500-year-old stepwell in Gujarat was once a lifeline for the city. Then it became a dumping ground. Hidden under layers of waste, with blocked water channels and stagnant water, it had slowly faded from public memory, even though it stood right in the heart of the city. But change began the day people decided not to look away. Through #ForceForGood an initiative by The Better India and Aditya Birla Group, 30 volunteers came together with one shared mission: to bring this historic water system back to life. By the end, 713 kilos of waste were cleared, revealing the stone steps, reopening the channels, and restoring the structure to its original purpose. With a storage capacity of nearly 2 lakh litres, the stepwell is now ready to hold water again, recharging groundwater, supporting the local ecosystem, and strengthening the city’s water future.
