The US/Israel war with Iran may have bumped Israel-Palestine out of the headlines. But it was, in part, a consequence of it. For years, many argued the Palestinian issue could be managed or bypassed. The region has paid the price for that assumption. I argue, in my latest article @BrookingsFP a core lesson of recent years: Middle East conflicts do not stay in their lanes. The Israel-Gaza war reverberated on the Israel-Lebanon front. The US/Israel war on Iran affects both Israelis and Palestinians. Attempts to compartmentalize these crises have repeatedly failed. Military force can degrade capabilities, eliminate threats, and create deterrence. But it cannot, by itself, resolve the political conditions that keep generating new rounds of conflict. The reality is that every time the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is pushed to the sidelines, it eventually returns, often in a more violent and regionally destabilizing form. A sustainable regional order requires equal security, freedom, dignity, and opportunity for all. It cannot exclude Palestinians—or any other people. The challenge now is bigger than securing a ceasefire or ending a war. It is breaking a cycle in which unresolved inequities fuel recurring violence—from Israel-Palestine to Iran and back again.
