Did you know theres an entire generation of women who did not experience autonomous childbirth?
Known as “Twilight Sleep”, laboring women in the 20th century we’re subjected to a cocktail of drugs to induce amnesia: fentanyl, valium, ketamine, midazolam, and nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Oftentimes they we’re strapped to the beds by their hands and feet to avoid sporadic movements. It was promoted as “pain free” and allowed agency for the doctors to do as they please while the laboring mother laid in supine position, awake, yet immobile and sedated through her entire delivery.
In this process many first time mothers we’re fear mongered into giving up their autonomy because doctors at the time believed women needed to be unresponsive, using forceps and episiotomies to bring the baby earth-side and lessen the chance of neonatal/maternal mortalities. They believed twilight sleep was more accommodating than general anesthesia because the mother could regain consciousness quickly, didn’t require ventilation with fewer risks to complications (they we’re terribly wrong).
Banned in the 1960’s, thousands of women have since came forth claiming they do not remember the first hours or days of their children’s life. They did not receive golden hour, we’re not taught to breastfeed, and many report not even recognizing their own children after being so heavily sedated.
There is an entire generation of adults who we’re exposed to these sedatives/opioids en utero and did not receive the foundations of trust in their first waking hours of life, relying on nurses to feed and take care of the them until their mothers came back from amnesia. What a traumatizing way to be brought into this world!
Golden hour is imperative for the neonate — this time is spent studying the parent’s faces, inducing oxytocin (a neuromodulator) which allows milk to be produced, reduces her risk of post partum hemorrhage, and most importantly — solidifying connection for the mother and neonate.
A lot has changed since we banned Twilight Sleep, but I truly believe there can be more reformation done to accommodate pain relief for laboring mothers. Informed consent, birth education, and resources for pregnant women can help us challenge the norm in what we believe is “painful” in childbirth. Empowered mothers begets empowered children. Lets make informed consent popular again.

@BritMartinez Lost my brother 9 years ago on a motorcycle accident! He died instantly- Is a miracle he’s alive! Sending lots of love and healing energy 🙏🏽 stay strong @BritMartinez

This is Ben. He’s 23 years old, and he’s in trauma ICU.
6 years ago, I married his older brother, and sweet Ben became my family.
On Saturday night, he was driving his motorcycle back to his college campus in Naples, FL when he lost control of the bike. The last thing he remembers was lying in the street and seeing headlights speeding toward him.
He was run over by the car.
And the car didn’t stop.
His body was crushed. His spine is fractured in two places. His pelvis, collar bone, and chest are broken. His ribs were shattered and his lungs collapsed.
He is currently in trauma ICU.
We need to air transport him to a specialized rehab hospital where he can be close to us as he is hours away. His insurance won’t cover it.
It’s a miracle he’s alive, and he has a long road to recovery.
The police are investigating the hit and run, but the likelihood of finding the car is low.
We set up a go fund me to cover the medical air transport, the rehabilitation costs, and the equipment and care he’ll need.
The last photo he took that day was of a beautiful sunset at the beach. He sent it to our family group chat, where we talk daily.
I have faith and hope that in time he will heal and live a full life.
Times are hard. If you can’t donate, please share this post and say a prayer.

This entire generation is lonely because we have no third place.
Our parents & grandparents had 3 distinct 'places'.
- Home
- Work
- Third place
A church, a pub, a gym, a clubhouse. Somewhere that men could go and enjoy each other's camaraderie. Connect on a deeper level. Shoot the shit & whatnot.
Now most of us don't even have a second place (thanks to remote work)
Our urge to socialize is further subsidized by social media (cheap & shallow alternative). It gives us the sense that we're having social interactions but its actually more isolating.
Loneliness will ruin you. Rob you of life. You need to make a deliberate effort to get out there & interact with the world. To become a part of your community. Make friends, acquaintances.
Become somebody that people want to have in their life & find people you want to have in your life.
We've lost this skill. It's easier than ever to stay inside & "pretend" to be a part of something. You need to make a deliberate effort to go out there and connect with the world.
Strong social bonds are a necessity for proper human function

@ZubyMusic I actually do the opposite, 1 day a week of social media is more than enough

@AfkarAmmous Non-linear movement refers to motion or change that doesn’t follow a straight or predictable path or pattern. In non-linear movement, the speed, direction, or acceleration in your moves can vary irregularly over time. Check Michaela Boehm work ✨
English

@awaremoma What is non linear movement? I’ve been trying to find a dance class I would enjoy, I think it’s a great way to move.

@AfkarAmmous @SvetskiWrites @saifedean Sounds Yumm! I have never try that. But we have beef marrow weekly, and drowne the sourdough in the fat 🤤

English

Grilled sheep spinal marrow on the menu today with @saifedean. The kids call it spaghetti. I wanted to take a picture but it was all gone in minutes.
