@OGdukeneurosurg Thank you for that. As a PT of 25 years I respect and admire how you manage even non surgical patients. The humanity in your approach is abundant. 🙏

Whether you agree or not, surgeons are incentivized to do surgery and while treating a patient to health while avoiding surgery is rewarding to patient (and me), it is not valued (at even a fraction of surgery) by payers or hospitals. I won’t operate unless it’s absolutely indicated & all reasonable conservative measures have failed. I care more about each patients health and their individualized care plan working than turning every person into an operative case.

I'm an odd spine surgeon, maybe. When my patients opt for no surgery, I keep seeing them if they wish. I help w/ symptoms, follow scans over time, & help interpret data about alternatives. A doctor is a guide. We should continue to guide, even if a person opts for a different path.
