@mitchellh It’s like AI powered recommendations on what rules to change with Pokémon 😂

@brankopetric00 I'd add to it if we're talking no market viability yet, it'd be direct access to SSH and Ruby on Rails to just prototype my way to revenue...

New startup. You're the first infrastructure hire.
CTO wants the platform ready in 3 months.
Option A: Kubernetes from day one
- Future-proof
- Steep learning curve
- Longer initial setup
- Easier to scale later
Option B: Simple ECS + Fargate
- Faster to production
- Less operational overhead
- Might need migration later
- AWS lock-in
Option C: Just EC2 + Docker Compose
- Fastest MVP
- Manual scaling
- Technical debt guaranteed
- Cheapest short-term
Team size: 4 developers (none with K8s experience)
Expected growth: 10x users in 12 months
Funding: Series A secured
What's your recommendation?

@ibuildthecloud With the price of RAM right now you're using luxuryJS, :)
English

@ccssmnn That was UNCALLED FOR, but I hope you can appreciate the joke. Happy holidays.

@engineering_bae Yeah as soon as you cross from VA or DC into MD, all the crash bars are mangled. It's wild.
English

@axtran Oh wow, I didn’t know this. Thank you for teaching me this!
English

@Amtrak This is the 171 to Roanoke! She’s taking great care of us in the Business class train :)
English

@Amtrak I want you to know that one of your employees, Tara Stocklin, is absolutely amazing on our train today out to Roanoke. People like her are the reason I always take Amtrak!
English

@engineering_bae I neglected mine until a week before deadline, good thing I caught it though since I pumped my HRA with like $1000 😅

Pay attention to your company’s non-salary and equity perks. Those additional benefits can really add up.
For example, my company will pay me $60 a month if I workout at least 12 times. Something I’m going to do regardless, so it’s easy money.
They also provide a $50 a month work from home stipend.

@rakyll My engineering teams factor in LoE for PRs for a reason. It is surprising to see a sister team get mad that we introduced cross-team PR processes...
English

@webguy I actually respect Amazon for truly using the same service they sell to customers! No incentive to have a higher reliablity internal system (like Google has w their infra)

It's great that AWS already shared a postmortem, and we can understand some things that went wrong, starting the outage.
A summary of the events, based on what the AWS team shared
The Pragmatic Engineer@Pragmatic_Eng
What caused the AWS outage that felt like it took down half the internet on Monday? It started with a race condition in DynamoDB's DNS propagation, which ended up setting the dynamod.us-east-1 .amazonaws .com DNS to empty. A deepdive and more details: blog.pragmaticengineer.com/aws-outage-us-…

@GergelyOrosz Tons of companies are single region. It's hard and you don't see any benefits until something goes wrong, so why care? Crazy CEO got different priorities.
English

Can we for a second appreciate how Robinhood took no responsibility for being down, and tried to put the blame on AWS.
However, it was Robinhood that decided to run from a single AWS region, and not be preapred to fail over, like other, more resillient AWS users did...
Robinhood Help@AskRobinhood
AWS (one of our third-party vendors) is experiencing an outage, which is affecting Robinhood services. We’re aware of the issue and will share an update once resolved.
English

@mitchellh Algorithm targeting content is a cancer. I do it right too!
English

@mariusschober @GergelyOrosz I don't think AI makes you better, either. Quicker to do simple things if they were honestly hard for you to do, but outsourcing the thinking is gonna impact the juniors who need to build those skills as foundations...
English

It's easier to open a browser and enter chatgpt dot com than it was to get a PC + modem
And my personal thesis is that social media generated the demand: zero attention span, constant anxiety... serious cognitive damage meets AI as a savior/relief.
That's why 70% of chats are non-work related. And those that are work-related can be seen for the most part as deciding "not to work very hard" in other words to outsource thinking, reading, writing.
English

If you’re wondering why there’s nonstop talk on AI across tech: it’s because this technology is adopted across the industry several times faster than the internet, smartphones or cloud took to get virtually everywhere.
Here’s one illustration (ChatGPT is a subset of AI ofc)

One AI year is seven Internet ones.

@benjamistan @GergelyOrosz Probably been told too many times in their lives they were one in a million genius
English

@GergelyOrosz I still don't get how they thought they'd get away with it

Attending @HashiCorp’s HashiConf today as it celebrates its 10th year. I helped organize the first one when I was 29. It’s really special to see a lot of the elements and programs I helped create still live on today. 🥹 @armon 🥰

@mitchellh I love you throwing all this brainpower and effort into interesting side projects. Literally doing what all of us dream of doing 😂

Libghostty is coming. 👻 The first library will be libghostty-vt: a zero-dependency (not even libc!) library that provides an API for parsing terminal sequences and maintaining terminal state, extracted directly from Ghostty's real-world proven core. mitchellh.com/writing/libgho…

@mitchellh We moved our front door to the side of the house with a nice planter entrance when I was younger. Amazing
