Three things Assassin's Creed needs to fix as a franchise, in order to be truly back to form:
1 - Procedurally Generated cutscenes: Ubisoft has relied on cutscenes that have no emotion, no proper motion capture for far too long. This style of cutscene has been a stain on every single Assassin's Creed since Odyssey, utterly ruining the presentation of any quest they are used in. Black Flag Resynced is getting across the board praise for how amazing the cutscenes from the original look in the remake, and is getting across the board criticism for how much of a step down these procedurally generated cutscenes are in the new content, it is actual whiplash when old cutscenes sometimes transition into these.
Going forward, this system needs to go entirely. It is okay to use this system in side quests in a huge RPG but it is absolutely NOT okay for the bulk of the main quest to have these, let alone in a non-RPG game like Black Flag. Especially when developers like CD Projekt Red and Warhorse Studios are making incredible cutscenes for both their main and side quests in arguably much bigger RPGs than Ubisoft's. Ubisoft needs to start delivering AAA level cutscenes again, this is a corner cut that simply cannot go on anymore.
2 - Writing: Assassin's Creed used to be a leader in storytelling in the gaming industry, now it's hard to even take their stories seriously. A company as big as Ubisoft NEEDS to start putting more experienced, truly great writers on their projects. It's pretty much a consensus now that Black Flag Resynced's new content is clearly written differently, and worse than the original game's content. There should not be this level of quality difference between old and new Ubisoft.
Ubisoft currently has Darby McDevitt as their only truly recognizable writer that we all know continues to deliver great material, but it is simply not enough for a company as big as Ubisoft to only have 1 truly notable writer and the rest of the writing to be so mediocre. This is a major aspect that will continue to hold back their games from being considered truly great if it is continued. Hire better writers, make storytelling a central piece of these games again.
3 - Non-linear storytelling and the Target Board: Recent Assassin's Creed games has adopted a non-linear style of storytelling where main quests suddenly gives you the freedom to go after any target out of a list of targets in any order. This is a huge issue because it means there can be no character development for the entire middle portion of the game, these stories are being forced into entirely eliminating character development, recurring side casts and any sense of progression in order to accommodate for the fact that the player can go through the main quest in any order. Naoe could not experience a life-changing event in one quest because the story HAS to accommodate for the fact that you can do these quests in any order, therefore every character in Shadows is static throughout the entire game.
Non-linear storytelling has to be entirely stripped out of this franchise going forward. Black Flag Resynced is all the proof you need that writing stories in a linear order makes a huge difference in how you write these games, it used to allow Ubisoft to have these games take place over the course of years, slowly developing and aging their protagonists and side cast through the story. Making them truly satisfying tales. Now, they are just boring target cleanups with small stories that don't connect to each other until the final act, where the story can finally move forward for like an hour before it wraps up.
Overall, Ubisoft's issues have stopped being gameplay. I think everyone who's played Shadows and Black Flag Resynced agrees that the gameplay of this franchise is in a good state, especially Black Flag in terms of non-RPG gameplay. The main issue remains storytelling and presentation, once that is fixed, I truly believe that Assassin's Creed and Ubisoft as a whole will been seen in a positive light again by everyone.
The ball right now is in the hands of Ubisoft Montreal with Assassin's Creed Hexe, if that game doesn't work out, I really think interest in new games from AC will simply end. And all that will be left is remakes. So I truly hope Hexe nails it.
