I can't understand how anyone can pay themselves a $850,000/year salary (as does Signal's president) out of donations, while still having the shamelessness to put this in the app to harvest said donations from people universally earning less. Shame is not a universal concept.

@DingusTheStrix IRC/XMPP for text chat, Mumble for voice chat, and Jitsi for screen sharing.

My opinion on the alternatives: Matrix - Good. It's Discord-like enough and the learning curve isn't as bad as people make it out to be. You'll never be free if your main priority is convenience. Also, don't use matrix(dot)org as a hostserver if you can help it. Research other homeservers. Stoat - Pretty Discord-like with self-hosting. Not bad. Spacebar - Same as Stoat, except probably even more like Discord in design. Fluxter - If you use this, then I highly recommend self-hosting because fluxter(dot)app will come with bullshit regarding free speech. Mumble - Reject Discord-slop. Embrace IRC-esque kino. Root - small gay platform trying to compete with Big Gay Discord. Has a lot of the issues that make Discord suck as a platform. Avoid it. TeamSpeak - lol. lmao. (I'm joking; based on some research, it's actually a solid alternative now. They allow self-hosting!) TL;DR - Don't use anything centralized and self-host if you can. Most of these are solid alternatives.
