In the near future, Malaysia could become like Pakistan or Bangladesh, where mobs kill people accused of blasphemy. This is happening faster than you think. There are several incidents but each time the police managed to get the situation under control. When it does happen, people will demand changes, but nothing will happen. Why? Because Muslim politicians are too scared to challenge the religious leaders. Religious leaders in Malaysia are gaining political power via the bureaucracy. It has been documented but nobody seems to care. All I can say is when you try to ride an Islamic tiger, it usually eats you. Just ask the post-independence leaders in Pakistan and Bangladesh. The only one who rode the tiger (in this case, socialism tiger) and tamed it was Lee Kuan Yew. If Lee remanied in Malaysia, he would not be able to tame the Islamic Tiger! She apologised, but the Islamic department in the state of Selangor opened an inquiry into whether she had brought “Islam into disrepute”. Earlier in January a gay-rights NGO cancelled a private glamping event after nationwide online backlash. Homosexuality is a crime punishable by whipping and prison terms of up to 20 years in Malaysia. In 2024 the owner of KK Super Mart, a convenience-store chain, was charged with intending to hurt Muslim feelings after socks bearing the word “Allah” appeared at three of its 800 outlets. Although “Allah” simply means God in Arabic and Malay, Malaysia’s home ministry declared in 2013 that the word should be reserved exclusively for Muslims.
