What happens when your employee's surname is Null? A complete lookup failure. It's a bit of an older story, but for one company, their employee lookup interface was written in ActionScript3. XML encoding in ActionScript treats "null" as an empty element. The server interprets this as receiving no parameter at all, breaking the request. The solution? Test fields for "null" and escape them as CDATA values instead. CDATA is a way to store text in XML that would otherwise cause encoding/decoding issues.
