From Exploit to Infrastructure: How Shibarium Tokenized Its Liabilities
When the 2025 bridge exploit hit, Shibarium did not respond with vague assurances. It introduced SOU, short for Shib Owes You, turning verified user claims into on-chain NFTs.
What changed
• Affected users received an NFT representing their verified claim
• Each NFT is issued on Ethereum, independent of centralized servers
• The claim is programmable and portable
• Large positions can be split across wallets
• Smaller claims can be merged
• NFTs can be transferred or traded
The structural shift
Instead of relying on verbal commitments or internal tracking, repayment obligations became transparent, tokenized assets recorded on chain. Debt moved from reputation-based trust to code-based structure.
SOU is not the final chapter. More resolutions are still in motion, including developments like the LEASH migration and broader ecosystem refinements.
Recovery in Web3 is rarely instant. But formalizing accountability on chain is a foundation, not a headline.
