Those were ancient theocratic councils and local hypocrites, not the Jewish people as a whole, and definitely not modern day Israel. I always like to reference the Vichy French to add some context here. Under Nazi rule, the Vichy French were often as brutal, or even more so, than Nazi or SS officers were to many of the French people, but they were not a direct representation of the French people as a whole.
