Even drone operations in places like Somalia rely on infrastructure routed through Germany. Remove that, and you don’t weaken Berlin—you blind Washington. Yet somehow the narrative persists: America is doing Germany a favour. That Europe is the dependent, the beneficiary, the so-called “freeloader.” It’s a convenient story. It’s also strategically backwards. Because the reality is simple: those bases are not acts of generosity. They are instruments of power. And they exist in Germany not for Germany’s benefit—but for America’s ability to operate far beyond its own borders. Take them away, and the question isn’t what Germany loses. It’s how much the United States does.

The Mac mini price hike doesn't look like a one-off. It looks like a pattern, and if you run local LLMs, you should pay attention. In March, Apple quietly removed the 512GB unified-memory Mac Studio option — the exact kind of config it had marketed as capable of running 600B+ parameter models locally. No announcement. Just gone. At the same time, the 256GB unified-memory upgrade reportedly went up by $400. Now the $599 / 256GB (Storage) Mac mini is gone too. The new floor is $799 / 512GB. You can frame that as a "storage upgrade", but that explanation feels thin. On MacBook Neo, the 256GB → 512GB jump is only $100, and that tier also adds Touch ID. So I don't think this is mainly about SSD storage. It looks more like memory economics. TrendForce has conventional DRAM contract prices up 90–95% QoQ, PC DRAM up 100%+, and server DRAM around 90%. AI hyperscalers are absorbing huge amounts of supply. Even Apple's Mac mini and Mac Studio are now supply-constrained for months, with Tim Cook specifically pointing to faster-than-expected demand from AI / agentic-tool users. Apple usually doesn't like raising the sticker price of an existing shipping product. So instead, we're seeing the cheap tier disappear, the extreme-memory tier disappear, and the remaining ladder quietly move up. If you were waiting for a cheap unified-memory box for local inference, that window may be closing, at least for a while.
