I have some sad news to share today. CFIB's founder, John Bulloch, passed away recently in Toronto at age 92. John was recognized as a Member of the Order of Canada for his work in creating our country's small business advocacy organization. John called me a few weeks ago, letting me know he had received some tough news from his doctors. When I visited him in the hospital the next day, his focus was not on himself (even after spending the night in the hallway), but on what was happening at CFIB. CFIB is planning a celebration of John’s life and legacy in the weeks ahead, in our Toronto office. This feels right as, a few years back, I named our office the John and Mary Bulloch Building on their 60th wedding anniversary. On a personal note, I will remember John as a great Canadian, a personal supporter and an incredibly funny and fascinating man. He lived the definition of a life well lived – living independently with the love of his life until age 92 and leaving a legacy of a strong organization focused on building a better country. John, I will miss you. CFIB's statement on founder John Bulloch’s passing: cfib-fcei.ca/en/site/rememb…

🛍️🐾This week, during Women's Entrepreneurship Week, I visited Carly at House of Paws to talk about running a small business. Women entrepreneurs are helping keep our communities strong, especially during Canada’s entrepreneurial drought. #SmallBusinessEveryday @CFIBNews

I'm thrilled to say I'll be taking on a new position as Bloomberg's Ottawa bureau chief, though also daunted at having to succeed the indefatigable @ldhillonkane. This bureau is such a strong team and I can't wait to keep elevating our work higher.

The New York Times can now proudly say that we have an office in Toronto, where most of our Canada team is based, for the first time in our 100+ years of covering the country. Very proud to be building up our presence here.

The federal spring economic update includes some welcome measures, but it is not enough to halt the alarming loss of small businesses across Canada. The update continues the federal government’s focus on investments in major projects and large companies, with small and medium-sized firms stuck in the same old mix of red tape and high taxes. I don’t see much that will help Canada avoid a seventh quarter in a row of losses in the net number of small businesses. We need action to stop Canada’s entrepreneurial drought.

Pleased to present Canada-US Trade Minister @DLeBlancNB with CFIB’s “One To Watch” Award for the federal/provincial work on Canadian Mutual Recognition Agreement. The agreement is a big step towards red tape reduction for small business. We spoke about red tape, including CFIA rules, and the need for important changes to tax policy for SMEs.

A small step forward—wine only, and only between two provinces. Where’s beer and spirits? And where’s the rest of Canada? The MOU on DTC is due May 2026. With weeks to go, only MB and NB have delivered. The rest are lagging. Canadians deserve real free trade, not half-measures.
