Documentation also takes many forms. The more knowledge you can link people to, not having to explain, the better.

But that implies that GH are building the archives using git, and for some reason I find that surprising.

I wish I understood _why_ @github changed the way archives are compressed. Maybe at GH’s scale it saves enough compute to be worth it? But surely you’d cache the generated artefacts for a while…? Given the downsides, the upside must be enormous for them. github.blog/changelog/2023…
