I find that one of the things a lot of these “neo-SIs” or FDE shops or whatever we want to call them get wrong is downstream of a fundamental assumption that you need an outside party to build and maintain a new bit of software, soup-to-nuts, which really makes you a “neo-MSO” with terrible margins—in fact, especially as the “encode -> deploy” bottleneck dissolves as a natural function of movement along the capability curve, it’s in the interest of all parties for the person or persons closest to the problem space (and the client or customer for whom the professional function exists to serve in the first place) to not only “learn how to fish” as a “user,” but also to participate intimately in the creation of the initial tooling, and then incontrovertibly demonstrate that they are able to “shape and extend the rod and net” as stewards of the logic and the data, with a tighter feedback loop and a greater scope of responsibilities (and thus, too, access to privileged context) than any SaaS vendor or rent-seeker attempting to re-sell someone’s expertise back to them.
With this end in mind, the nature of the engagements are fundamentally different, and that’s echoed backwards, all the way to our very first discovery calls. If there’s no one (and I mean a single person, not a vague “IT department”) to “receive” what’s made—and commit to caring for it—then we don’t move forward.

Yes, as long as all parties can come to terms on a measurable outcome that drives it. The technology doesn’t really matter that much IME, and less and less as the cost of code generation continues to drop. Getting someone to use the thing to achieve the result and then prove that they can take responsibility for and extend it as needed is where most of our attention goes. The “product,” which can be anything from a repo w/ context out of which someone drives Claude Code to accomplish a task to a full-stack app with an MCP surface, emerges as a function of that process.
