@ballydolphin Track surfaces were also geared for speed to a dangerous degree that they’ve now scaled back; ultimately finishing times are so dependent on track, condition, layout, runners in race/how race unfolds that just comparing times between horses especially in different eras is flawed

It’s because drug testing became a thing. Anabolic steroids were advertised in the 70/80’s. Horse further back were given cocaine, arsenic, and all kinds of insane stuff. Sir Barton was on coke. Tommy Woodcock’s training notes mention arsenic.

There ARE other factors. Lack of equipment available to improve (harness racing keeps speeding up—sulkies are getting better. Humans have times better shoes, etc)
I’ve always been curious how interval training, strength training, or Zone 2 training could be used with horses too.
