@RSA_Observer I always assumed the propaganda effect but I never knew anyone with first hand knowledge. Did you read the recent Foreign Affairs article? It has this interesting bit about 20-20-60 and I wonder if your friends ever shed any light on this to you foreignaffairs.com/united-states/…

To my surprise, Iran is the world's 10th largest producer of steel. It's annual production is only a bit less than that of Germany (2025 numbers, 32 vs 34 million tons).

Should this happen, the same people who not even a month ago were ridiculing the notion that it would ever come to that will enthusiastically support it, while continuing to insist that everything is going according to plan and indeed that the war is going even better than they ever would have dreamt.

Breaking: Pentagon officials have made detailed preparations for deploying U.S. ground forces into Iran, multiple sources tell CBS News. The military has also held meetings to prepare for how to handle the possible detention of Iranian soldiers cbsnews.com/news/trump-adm…

Assassinating heads of state has been taboo since at least the Treaty of Westphalia. There are a number of very practical reasons it's a very bad idea. For one, it makes it near impossible for states to negotiate. It also galvanizes public opinion (in places such as Iran) behind the regime. It's seen as an attack on the whole people.
Aaron Bastani@AaronBastani

The response to this is rather strange. Did anyone sensible seriously think that Israel and the US could assassinate a literal head of state, and that this wouldn’t normalise…political assassinations?

Each to their own and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But really? Constitution Hill would beat Calandagan over 2,400m?
Rover@Blackburnfanat1

@abracing0 Disagree. It’d be push button stuff on Con Hill. If the French jockey club, had any common sense in the world, they’d open the ARC up to geldings this year, Nicky would run ConHill. Record attendances would follow. It’s the best business decision they could ever make.

@cashmir316 @Metalhead_Ninja @WyattzWorId they aren’t buying and holding, its an entirely hype driven speculator market so they just need to flip to next buyer. Pokémon is the most lucrative media franchise of all time, its comparable to Disney now so it’s always going to have a market.

Chuck Norris jokes are pretty fascinating bc they started as a way of making fun of him (the same way you'd make fun of a Steven Seagal movie where he's an invincible badass with no flaws) but over time it just became "this guy is genuinely badass" bc no one watched his movies

As part of the 1956 invasion of Egypt. Ben-Gurion wanted to topple Abdel Nasser, take the Sinai, dissolve Jordan, and conquer and settle the south of Lebanon up to the Litani. This was 8 years before the founding of the PLO and a quarter century before Hezbollah existed.

I'm going to make some obvious points. (1) Blowing up all the oil infrastructure in the Middle East is an insane idea, and may well result in a global economic crash and humanitarian crisis unrivaled in the lives of those now living. We're talking about the price of everything everywhere rising, from food to gas, at a moment when inflation was already high. All of that will be laid at the feet of the authors of this war. (2) The antebellum status quo of Feb 27, 2026 was just not that bad, but we're unlikely to return to it. Expect indefinite, long-term, ongoing disruptions to everything out of the Middle East. (3) Also assume tech financing crashes for the indefinite future. The genius plan to get the Gulf states caught in the crossfire has incinerated much of the funding for LPs, for datacenters, and for IPOs. Anyone in tech who supported this war may soon learn the meaning of "force majeure" as funding gets yanked. (4) Many capital allocators will instead be allocating much further down Maslow's hierarchy of needs, towards useful basic things like food and energy. (5) It's fortunate that all those progressives yelled about the "climate crisis." Yes, their reasoning about timelines was wrong, and much of the money was wasted in graft, but the result was right: we all need energy independence from the Middle East, pronto. It's also fortunate that Elon and China autistically took climate seriously. Now they're going to need to ship a billion solar panels, electric vehicles, batteries, nuclear power plants, and the like to get everyone off oil, immediately. (6) It's not just an oil and gas problem, of course. It's also a fertilizer problem, and a chemical precursor problem. Maybe some new sources will come online at the new prices, but it takes time to dial stuff up, particularly at this scale, so shortages are almost a certainty. That said, China has actually scaled up coal-to-chemicals[a,c] (C2C), and there's also something more sci-fi called Power-to-X[b] which turns arbitrary power + water + air into hydrocarbons. But all of that will need to get accelerated. I have a background in chemical engineering so may start funding things in this area. (7) Ultimately, this war is going to result in tremendous blame for anyone associated with it. It's a no-win scenario to blow up this much infrastructure for so many people. Simply not worth it for whatever objective they thought they were going to attain. But unless you're actually in a position to stop the madness, the pragmatic thing to do is: scramble to mitigate the fallout to yourself, your business, and your people. the most amazing thing about this propaganda was that China kept it to itself for domestic use an American journalist had to find it through their own channels, upload it here, someone else had to run it through a translation service… it wasn’t distributed through eg tiktok…
