This is a near perfect day to remember the man who first inched closer to the sub 2 hours in an official marathon race.
Not long ago, Kelvin Kiptum ran 2:00:35 in Chicago, which was unsettling in the way it shifted belief.
And then, just as the world began to adjust to that new reality, he was gone. Gone forever.
Kelvin Kiptum died in a car accident, alongside his coach Gervais Hakizimana. Man, this happened just after the record had been ratified. He was 24.
We will never know what a contest between Sabastian Sawe would have produced, but it would have been historic

Rolls-Royce securing the UK’s Small Modular Reactor contract is one of the few genuinely strategic moves this country has made in years.
We’re talking about homegrown nuclear capability, thousands of skilled jobs, and long term energy security, not just another short term fix. SMRs can be built faster and cheaper than traditional plants and crucially they’re scalable.
The UK is finally backing its own industry instead of outsourcing everything abroad.
Personally would like us to go much heavier on nuclear power but this is an important move, which will create around 8'000 jobs.
