.@BarackObama's bracket is set. What do you think of his picks? Good luck to all of the athletes competing and the young men from @MBK_Alliance getting a peek into careers in sports.

In Shigeaki Mori, a Japanese atomic bomb survivor from Hiroshima, President Obama saw the best of humanity, even while reflecting on one of our darkest chapters. Mori died Sunday at age 88. Today, we honor his example, which President Obama spoke to in 2016 when he visited Hiroshima on the 71st anniversary of America dropping the atomic bomb on that city. Among the more than 140,000 killed in Hiroshima, Mori discovered 30 years later that there were 12 American POWs. He researched the men and wrote to their families, who didn’t yet know how their loved ones had died. President Obama was the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima, and while there, he reflected on Mori’s work — how it connected people through their shared humanity, regardless of their countless differences: “We’re not bound by genetic code to repeat the mistakes of the past. We can learn. We can choose. We can tell our children a different story –- one that describes a common humanity; one that makes war less likely and cruelty less easily accepted. We see these stories in the hibakusha –- the woman who forgave a pilot who flew the plane that dropped the atomic bomb, because she recognized that what she really hated was war itself; the man who sought out families of Americans killed here, because he believed their loss was equal to his own.” In telling the story of the universality of loss, Mori set an example for us all and we are all better for his contributions.

Reverend Jesse Jackson called on each of us to be heralds of change, to be messengers of hope; to step forward and say “Send me” wherever we have a chance to make an impact. How fortunate we were that Jesse Jackson answered that call. What a great debt we owe to him.

Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But right now, they’re under attack. Several Republican-controlled states have redrawn their congressional maps to give themselves an unfair advantage in the midterm elections. Now Virginia has a chance to help level the playing field. If you live in the Commonwealth, early voting begins March 6, and Election Day is on April 21. Vote YES.

My Brother's Keeper Alliance
My Brother's Keeper Alliance@MBK_Alliance·
Today, we celebrate 12 years of My Brother's Keeper Alliance! Guided by our six milestones, and rooted in the belief that communities are the unit of change to realize improved life outcomes for boys and young men of color, we build pathways for progress that lead to real, measurable impact. Our Leadership Academy helps young leaders grow in confidence and skill, MBK Ambassadors lift up youth voice and leadership in community spaces, and our MBK Communities bring together partners to expand opportunity in ways that are measurable and meaningful. Through this work, we are not just redefining what opportunity means for boys and young men of color, we are creating safe, supportive communities where they feel valued and have clear pathways to opportunity and success. Today is a chance to celebrate how far we’ve come and recommit to the work ahead. MBK is deeply grateful for President Obama, the mentors, families, partners, and young leaders who inspire our mission every single day. Together, we continue to build a future full of possibility.

Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of a true giant, the Reverend Jesse Jackson. We will always be grateful for Jesse's lifetime of service, and the friendship our families share. We stood on his shoulders. We send our deepest condolences to the Jackson family and everyone in Chicago and beyond who knew and loved him.

Watching the @NBA All Star game and @TeamUSA at the Winter Olympics, it’s clear that sports — just like music and art — still has the power to bring us together, build community, and remind us of our common humanity.
