This, regrettably, is a problem of our own creation. The stakes are high for these grads and you can understand why they'd take any opp to get a leg up. Universities need to do better by their grads and postdocs. It starts with us.

And therein lies the challenge here. These were never going to be equal opportunities for all regions. Where will place-based investments come from? Politicians. How do politicians decide where to put things? Favor and results.
Brookings Metro@BrookingsMetro

The geographic nature of advanced industries such as auto manufacturing means that broad investment won’t be sufficient to revitalize local clusters, write @MarkMuro1 and @YangYoungYou. “Place-based” investments will likely be necessary. brookings.edu/articles/the-n…

That said, the odds are good this new ranking will be a better measure of some metrics we all agree are better indicators of impact and success--and less reliant on the old ones we all love to bemoan but have been ineffective at changing. So lessons to be learned for sure.

A problem of our own making here, but there needs to be a ranking that everyone can be at the top of, and I suppose that's what the BRICS nations are hoping to achieve: thepienews.com/news/brics-uni…

Last year Tecnológico de Monterre announced a massive investment in faculty hiring, partially to lure Canadian and US academics south. Today you’ll see their add in the Chronicle making their pitch. The war for academic talent is truly global, and we ignore it at our peril.

As the politics of higher education grow more fraught, “universities today are under great pressure to be responsive to their communities,” one expert said. Is public-focused research the answer? chroni.cl/45J24Sj
