This dynamic is common in narcissistic cults, the leader uses it to maintain loyal vs disloyal programming, break individuality and reinforce total dependence on the leader. The leader arbitrarily punishes a member for minor or nonexistent reasons to demonstrate dominance. The rest of the members then cheer, applaud, denounce, or enthusiastically participate not because they genuinely believe the punishment is justified, but because it assures them of their own safety (thank god it’s not me!) while proving their loyalty to the leader. Only complete garbage people would humiliate themselves like this.
