it took me watching @gakonst to get the narrative finally tempo et al are always describing the SOLUTION : agents can pay for shit but they always miss the PROBLEM in story telling problem: generating API keys & setting up cc payments for each agent DOES NOT SCALE MPP does
Tempo@tempo

Agent payments will soon overtake human payments on the internet. The Machine Payments Protocol (@mpp) is a new open standard co-authored by @stripe and @tempo. It’s designed to be extensible and payment-method agnostic, already supporting stablecoins, cards, and more.

nailed design you say? lol after building @pawrlink for 3 months I spent $500 on everything, wild how companies can't make it these days but can imagine those were heavy on new tech territory for a new messenger is also just too competitive and not many people out there who care about privacy and then even less that care about moving their contacts onto a private one

Update: @VitalikButerin donated 128 $ETH in November to Session and SimpleX and now Session has just informed everyone they will be closing down next month if they don’t receive more funding. Literally, one of the shortest notices you can give for a professional project. It’s clear you would’ve known your runway and budget long before just posting the month before, we get donations or we close next month. Something feels off here. I personally really like Session and their branding + design, but I find this rather appalling and I have to question where all the funding they did have over the years went to. Doesn’t appear the quality of life of the co-founders, from the outside, is phased at all… and generally with VC funding and investors, never does. Their asses are always up and covered from the get-go. I don’t mean to really kick a dead horse, but man this is daily news in crypto and was hoping that privacy messengers and communications would be somewhat different… be unaffected by the same common mismanagement and grifting, but naive to think so. Not implying at all Session was a grift, but clear mismanagement. At least SimpleX is still up and running and better believe @VectorPrivacy has just started its trajectory. Collective lesson learned, privacy messengers do not need a token model.
vitalik.eth@VitalikButerin

Encrypted messaging, like @signalapp, is critical for preserving our digital privacy. Two important next steps for the space are (i) permissionless account creation and (ii) metadata privacy. @session_app and @SimpleXChat are two messaging apps pushing these directions forward. For this reason I've donated 128 ETH to each. Addresses available on their websites if you wish to follow on: getsession.org simplex.chat But also, actually download and use them! Neither of the two are perfect pieces of software, they have a way to go to get to truly optimal user experience and security. Strong metadata privacy requires decentralization, decentralization is hard, users expecting multi-device support makes everything harder. Sybil / DoS resistance, both in the message routing network and on the user side (without forcing phone number dependence) adds further difficulty. These problems need more eyes on them. I wish all teams working on these important problems best of luck.

honest review of @tempo. its legit. not another L2. its the future was hacking a quick game @tempaitown. expected the usual Metamask connect wallet sheningans. but no. blew my mind you create a wallet with passkey. one click. was lowkey bracing for the Privy upsell. never came fund it w/ USD from any chain. done. fiat/CC is inevitable bc it's Stripe best is you can create unlimited delegated keys for agents/apps, "$10/day limit". it's configurable like API keys. @gakonst and their engs actually cooked no more smart wallet, paymasters, sponsored gas, all the EVM junk SV undefeated while NY gooning to Vanify Fair. i'm all in

@materkel Since MPP is an open standard doesn't matter that much and market will sort things out? That said would've also preferred if MPP and x402 would've joined forces.

Stripe & Tempo launching their own standard instead of working on and integrating with x402 feels like such a missed opportunity... same as with them launching an L1 instead of an L2. We'll probably see 100 other different standards now pop up just because of Stripe's big ego. Thank you so much Stripe.

@tldr_x @tempo btw it’s integrated alongside x402 into @pawrlink already so agents can use it to create their own linkinbio pages and update them via paid endpoints

I just spent a few minutes playing with @tempo. + Lets agents pay for tons of pre-loaded online services. + Easy set up from terminal. + My claude just paid $0.01 to hit a flight search API. + I funded the tempo wallet with a free $1.00 by verifying my X account. Whole process was super easy, and very fun. It already feels like a massive unlock.

@0FJAKE @farcaster_xyz just make the feed exactly how it was pre-February 2024 when people actually talked to each other on Farcaster (and when the majority of the sticky accounts still active were onboarded) the main product is the feed the solution is fixing the feed

Farcaster (@farcaster_xyz) at its best was a place to make money, make friends, and have fun. The problem is, for many months now, people have lost money, lost friends, and not had fun. I don't have a great solution, but I think that's a pretty good description of the problem.

@cass_on_mars @0FJAKE @farcaster_xyz a bit long but well said on VC pressure - just different conditions to operate within and limitations which are not allowing to explore a token or decentralization on neynar end

The problem is VC-driven narratives don't make a decentralized social network successful, at scale or not. When Merkle quit, to Dan's own credit, he states that they "failed". But that failure is not a permanent condition, nor is it implying "no solution exists". Rather, it is that the kinds of approaches that work under VC pressure cooker antics don't succeed. Small, 1-2 day complexity, engineering efforts to crank out new ideas, heavily annotated with metrics tooling to measure "adoption" is attempting to apply data-driven approaches when categorically the problem is exacerbated by exactly that. Solving decentralized social requires a more holistic approach: throw out the analytics for all but the most basic things — measure 20D, 30D, 90D retention from network data, sure, but don't make it the target to index on. Define a heuristic for serendipity: a new user onboards, how do they find other users they will enjoy interacting with. How often do they hit frustrations with users they don't enjoy interacting with. Optimize for that. In the meantime, start growing the userbase, in the same slow, hard, manual onboarding we did from the beginning. Cultivate culture by hand until it hits a natural gravity that draws more people into its orbit. Neynar taking over is just going to repeat the same problems. They're analytic driven, but now they're also having to cost/revenue optimize, and it shows: 1. First thing tweeted from the Farcaster account on X was shilling their app studio product. 2. First non-neynar validator node added was not a community run one with an outstanding request, it was a team with a closed beta client, VC-funded, promises to run only the stock snapchain node, basically adding redundancy but no real collaboration or decentralization. 3. First feature added to the Farcaster app was the Neynar bot integration button. 4. First change to mini apps exploration wasn't making it easier to find new mini apps, it was a funnel on mobile to drive users to use the app studio. These decision make sense from a "grow revenue from existing userbase" standpoint, but this is the same problem that was endemic to Merkle's approach. To get momentum in the userbase, the things that worked weren't revenue-positive, they were orthogonal to revenue. Maximize for serendipity. That's why we soft forked with hypersnap, and that's what we'll continue to do with Quorum as our farcaster client.
