I see a lot of curiosity about this, so I’m going to provide some insight as someone that has similar experience. Short answer is no. Neither company has a special exchange program with UNILAG. Goldman Sachs in particular had (maybe still has) a dedicated African Recruiting Initiative (ARI). I know this because I was part of the first set of interns recruited under ARI in 2018 while I was an undergrad at LAUTECH. I later returned as a full-time engineer and interviewed students for the same program. Goldman started ARI in 2018 as an effort to improve diversity at the company. Software engineers flew in from London, New York, and Hong Kong to Lagos to hold a recruitment day where they shared insights about the company and interviewed candidates through group projects and 1:1 interviews, followed by HackerRank assessments and final remote 1:1 interviews. I found out about the opportunity through Stutern and Jobberman at the time. The inaugural program recruited both full-time engineers and summer interns. Successful interns were hired into the London office, and Goldman partnered with SEO (hence the SEO connection) to prepare candidates for corporate life before they moved to London. Candidates who did well during the internship got return offers as full-time engineers, so many of us already had full-time offers before graduating. The first cohort was quite diverse, with students from UNILAG, Covenant, LAUTECH, UI, OAU, and Ashesi (Ghana). It was mostly dominated by students from UNILAG and Covenant, largely because of access to information. They found out about the program, shared it among themselves, and prepared together, and it’s the same reason they continue to dominate YoY. The program has continued since 2018, with subsequent years mostly hiring summer interns, so it’s mainly open to students still in school. There have also been a lot of changes to the process over the years. Applications for the next summer usually open around November/December, so if you’re a student looking to work at these firms, keep an eye on LinkedIn or regularly check their careers page. Personally, the program was life-changing, and I tried to pay it forward by mentoring a few friends who also got into the program and were retained as full-time engineers. Many of us from that first cohort have since grown into VPs at Goldman or moved on to become senior engineers at Meta, Google, Microsoft, Palantir, DRW, and Citadel etc while others have gone on to start companies. So if you’re a student looking to work at these companies, the easiest way in is through the internship pipeline, so hustle for it while you’re still in school. That said, I’ve also seen people who didn’t get in through the internship route come in later as full-time engineers, so that’s very possible too. Hope this helps someone.

I turn 30 in Oct and I've spent the last 10 years building Selar, so this is what the youth mean by policies being created to crush growing businesses. We are the pioneering and largest creator company in Nigeria (Africa actually), and instead of being supported by the government, the LIRS team is keen on trying to scapegoat us to set a precident. Beyond the huge numbers seen in the headlines, we are still a young company just trying to make our mark for the creator economy in a country where we've never been supported once, we're literally a bootstrapped company. In 2025 alone, we've fulfilled our tax obligation in almost 9 figures and we've never missed out on any of our tax obligation over the years. You can check the records. We are a software company, we make our ecommerce software available to our thousands of creators in not just Nigeria but 13 other African countries and for that, we earn a small commission of 4%, most of which goes to our payment provider. This is the same business as shopify, teachable, e.t.c There is no reason LIRS is hounding us for a backdated 5% royalty fee on all sales when we've clearly explained our line of business to them and shared everything to prove we are not a royalty based business. What they're asking us to do is raise our pricing to extort these funds from our creators which is odd considering our creators still pay taxes on their income. No creator company in the world charges as high as even 5%. Also, less payment gateway charges we get 1-3% max, so where do we pay backdated 5% fees from? The government would have to decide if it wants the Nigerian creative economy to grow or not. This conversation is important to me because we pioneered this industry of monetizing digital products online in Nigeria and today we host over 400k creators selling using our platform. This is an opportunity for the government to show it's committment to making Nigeria work for young Nigerians especially in the creator economy. Time and money we should be spending investing into our business and it's growth for the GDP of this nation is being spent in long back and forth. We can't catch up with the west if this is what we're facing at home. Above everything else, disputes like this are distracting from the real work. If anything, for all our CSR contributions to the education system in the country with our Smart Hustle Anti fraud initiative and our other efforts, we should be getting tax rebates, but we're not even asking for anything but to be left alone to build our business. Re social media ban - one thing I’ve found really odd is how close to impossible it is to get a device for your child that looks like a smartphone (so it doesn’t draw attention to them) but does not carry social media. The demand for this from parents is very high but the way iOS and Android are designed make it close to impossible to achieve what you want as a parent. I spent an inordinate amount of time on this and ended up so frustrated. One of the things that proved to be the biggest challenge is that most apps have an inbuilt browser in them so no matter the amount of blocking you do, kids can always find a way around them. Why can’t Apple and Google just make an U16 version of their OS?
