@DoubleEph @tosinolaseinde Some people would say Reigate isn't part of London too, but I have a maximalist view: I think Cambridge, Oxford, and Brighton are part of London :-)

Something isn't adding up. According to available data, Lagos has a population of about 20 million people, while London has around 9 million. London has a larger total land area than Lagos. Despite this, many Londoners live in relatively small flats that feel tight. Lagos, on the other hand, has fewer high-rise residential buildings and a smaller land area. So how does Lagos accommodate more than twice London's population? Where are all the people actually living?

Mowe and Ifo can’t really be counted as Lagos in any meaningful sense. But it’s a weird one. Families living in one room is not uncommon so can be very very cramped. But the rich probably have more space than those here. So the space gap between rich and poor is definitely a lot larger in Lagos than in London

@tosinolaseinde And to add, buildings cover only about 14% of London, if you add roads, railways and other built stuff you get up to around 30%. Gardens, green space and water make up about 65%

Botswana is in the middle of nowhere. It is so dry and arid that they practically worship rain even naming their currency after it. They won a lottery ticket with diamonds and Seretse Khama and did an astonishing amount of good with it (relative to the clown shows all around them).
The diamond show is now over and they now need to pick themselves up again from a very good position. What’s the story here?

Botswana did everything right: they put their diamond money in a sovereign wealth fund, funded education, successfully fought corruption, and tried to diversify their economy. And it hardly made a difference. Growth still reversed when the diamond market went bust. The education spending produced hardly any improvement in student performance. Turns out “good institutions” are not, in fact, the secret sauce, at least not on their own. This is not at all surprising if you have the right priors, but it’s very interesting to see it documented and quantified. Great article

It’s incredible how one mildly confrontational interview can ruin someone’s reputation, if they have no substance, no depth of thought. First it was Gary Stevenson; now Zack Polanski (see quoted tweet below). Will our new PM Andy Burnham be next?

It’s not yet being acknowledged, because most people are always extremely late,
But due to a confluence of an emerging meta commodity boom,
as well as certain demographic effects, we are right on the verge of another classic “Africa rising” cycle.
This happens every thirty years (1970s and the famous 2000s) and during it a lot of fortunes can be made before the inevitable bust.
