That post from Ursula von der Leyen is getting quite a bit of attention on social media. It's mostly people poking fun at Europeans for not wanting to work at weekends (often from self-loathing Europeans). But seriously – what are Europeans supposed to say? The US and Israel have launched an attack on Iran. An attack that in no way adheres to international rules. And the Europeans were not consulted in the slightest. In Europe, we have a war – Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine. That should be our focus. The US has demonstrated time and again that it has no respect for Europe. So why should we even have any opinion on this whatsoever? Europe's view of the Iranian regime is crystal clear and always has been. That hasn't changed – and everyone ought to know it. Foreign policy is not conducted on social media – and it is exceedingly rare that a decades-long problem can be fixed with missiles over a weekend. It has never happened. It is therefore completely irrelevant what the Europeans might have to say in the middle of an attack whose outcome nobody can predict. So yes, it is perfectly reasonable to announce that we in the EU will meet on Monday – and yes, there has undoubtedly been a great deal of inter-European communication in the run-up to this attack and over the weekend, but political decisions are simply best taken when proper procedures are followed and a strategy is put in place. Trump may well believe that problems are solved with bombs and idiotic pronouncements on social media, but day by day the long-term costs of this behaviour are mounting – geopolitically and economically. And yes, when the time comes to clean up after Trump's mess, I rather suspect the Americans will come expecting the Europeans to muck in with the clean-up. That'll be a no from us.

🇵🇱 Sikorski: I suspect Trump thought that if there were no further supplemental package, Ukraine would find itself in difficulty much faster, and the war might therefore be brought to an end because Ukraine would be forced into concessions. I think they will eventually find that, with European support, Ukraine is not falling, and that the war cannot be ended without Ukrainian agreement and without European agreement as well, because, to use a Trumpian term, US cards are not as strong as they were. My bet is that this war will end not like the Second World War but like the First World War — namely when Putin runs out of resources. He’s already spent his national reserve fund. His last big pile of resources is the gold reserve. He started with 2,200 tons. I hear it’s down to 1,700. So this is the thing to watch, because this is how he’s funding his war.

The Danish Prime Minister declares that Europe, lacking both the ability and the will to defend itself, will ultimately perish. The NATO Secretary General declares, and I quote: "Russia has brought war back to Europe." End quote. Therefore, we must be prepared for a conflict of a scale comparable to those experienced by our grandfathers or great-grandfathers. The German Defense Minister does not rule out the possibility that Russia might be prepared to attack a NATO member state not in three or four years, but as early as this year."

This is a big mistake to allow the aggressor to take something. It was a big mistake at the very beginning, starting with 2014. And even before that, during the attack and occupation of parts of Georgia. And even before that, when Chechnya was occupied, with total destruction and one million casualties – both killed and wounded. Many mistakes were made. That's why now I don't want to be the President who will repeat the mistakes made by my predecessors or other people. I'm not just speaking about Ukraine. I'm speaking about the leaders of different countries that allowed an aggressive country like Russia to come onto their territory. Because you can't stop Putin with your kisses or flowers. I never did it and that's why I don’t feel that it's the right way. My advice to everybody – don’t do that with Putin. Otherwise, there will be a first step, then in five years, he will rebuild his military, increase the number of soldiers, his army will be well trained. Because he has lost a lot of well-trained people. He is losing 30–35 thousand people per month now. Can you imagine this in the 21st century? Can you imagine – he’s losing 35,000 each month? I'm not sure that he knows about it.

Appeasement is always a sign of weakness. Europe cannot afford to be weak - neither against its enemies, nor ally. Appeasement means no results, only humiliation. European assertiveness and self-confidence have become the need of the moment.

Taiwan geht uns nichts an, Syrien geht uns nichts an, die Ukraine geht uns nichts an, Grönland geht uns nichts an. Bald gehen uns dann Dänemark, Estland, Lettland, Litauen und Polen nichts mehr an. Und am Ende stehen wir ganz alleine da, wenn es nach @KrahMax und seiner unpatriotischer Bande geht. Eine solche Außenpolitik führt zwangsläufig nicht nur ins Abseits, sondern auch in den Abgrund.

Dazu wird sich die @cducsubt am Montag verhalten müssen. Das geht an die Grundfesten europäischer Integration. Das ist kein politischen Spielchen mehr. Wer in diesem Auseinandersetzungen nicht für Europa ist, ist für andere.
