@scousenick420 Have you ever read it??? It’s 100% not a children’s book and whoever says that is lying to you. Not only is the vernacular dated and elaborate but the sentence structure and lengthy writing is often hard to get your head around as an adult. Love that book! but it’s not for kids

things flying over your head is actually an integral part of reading, and it doesn't just stop when you reach adulthood. you'll miss lots of literary themes until you experience them - like heartbreak, or parenthood, or sickness, or grief. that's what makes reading so rich!!

my main memory of reading books a little too advanced for me as a kid is having fun with what I did understand, and having even more fun if I revisited the books a few years later

@Barleykorn @twilliamc15 @pete_churchill They're just so well written that its almost impossible to not understand them. Even if you're young enough that it's somebody reading to you, Tolkien's prose just shines through fantastically

@bazashc @twilliamc15 @pete_churchill I think I read it for the first time in First school. My mum loved LOTR but she gave me the Hobbit to read first, specifically because it was more geared towards kids than LOTR. She did read sections of LOTR to me though.

Got tired of reading the kiddy books for bedtime and decided to read the Hobbit to my 6 & 7 year olds I hadn’t read it since like 5th grade and it’s over the top linguistically advanced for kids I thought they might struggle but they absolutely loved it Every page they’d stop me 5+ times asking what certain words mean and I had to consistently stop and explain things but man I feel like it has been absolutely great for them (and me tbh) Only classical novels from here on out at bedtime
