This decision makes America less safe, today and tomorrow. Pete Hegseth just told the entire U.S. tech sector: don't make a deal with the U.S. military because my next meltdown might mark you as more dangerous than China. It turns out, nothing is undermining our military capabilities more than Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump's fragile masculinity.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth@SecWar

This week, Anthropic delivered a master class in arrogance and betrayal as well as a textbook case of how not to do business with the United States Government or the Pentagon. Our position has never wavered and will never waver: the Department of War must have full, unrestricted access to Anthropic’s models for every LAWFUL purpose in defense of the Republic. Instead, @AnthropicAI and its CEO @DarioAmodei, have chosen duplicity. Cloaked in the sanctimonious rhetoric of “effective altruism,” they have attempted to strong-arm the United States military into submission - a cowardly act of corporate virtue-signaling that places Silicon Valley ideology above American lives. The Terms of Service of Anthropic’s defective altruism will never outweigh the safety, the readiness, or the lives of American troops on the battlefield. Their true objective is unmistakable: to seize veto power over the operational decisions of the United States military. That is unacceptable. As President Trump stated on Truth Social, the Commander-in-Chief and the American people alone will determine the destiny of our armed forces, not unelected tech executives. Anthropic’s stance is fundamentally incompatible with American principles. Their relationship with the United States Armed Forces and the Federal Government has therefore been permanently altered. In conjunction with the President's directive for the Federal Government to cease all use of Anthropic's technology, I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a Supply-Chain Risk to National Security. Effective immediately, no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic. Anthropic will continue to provide the Department of War its services for a period of no more than six months to allow for a seamless transition to a better and more patriotic service. America’s warfighters will never be held hostage by the ideological whims of Big Tech. This decision is final.

@DavidMavis11 @AnthropicAI @chrisfralic Virtually the entire software industry installs abuse safeguards in their products - set based on regional law, reasonable liability protection, and the company’s own standards of harmful activity. You’d be unable to do business without it.

Exactly, the government doesn’t have to buy Claude and the government has the ability to set terms of those who want to sell to the government. One of those terms is you can’t use an AI in your products from a company who has the ability to interfere with lawful use of the product, Say Microsoft uses Claude to develop software for the defense department, and Anthropic AI triggers the software to shut down because it determined it was against the Anthropic CEO’s wishes. You can’t use an Ai that can be made to enforce the CEO’s decisions over the government legal use.

@DavidMavis11 @AnthropicAI @chrisfralic No one is forcing the pentagon to buy Claude. And companies are allowed to have a ToS that even government agencies must respect if they buy the product.

@AnthropicAI @chrisfralic You said it yourself, we support all lawful use EXCEPT. You don’t get to decide which lawful uses are allowed. We have an entire elected government that makes the laws, we don’t have corporate CEO’s making government decisions

@noahsloss it doesn't make any sense! put $50M today into a new "stable schools fund" that spends $25M/yr on teachers. commit to fund it with new surplus of up to $30M/yr starting in 2028. get the city to agree to fund the difference, starting '28, if there's no surplus. solutions exist!

- The $429 million fund balance doesn’t have to be spent all at once, it could be spread out over many years to pay for ongoing costs like raises - Fund balance can be used however the District chooses - The Chronicle says SFUSD is about to fall off the fiscal cliff every year

The credit card image is extremely misleading and mirrors an ongoing narrative. SFUSD does not pay interest on its $426 million fund balance! It is not borrowing this money! It’s cash sitting in the District’s bank account. From District management’s Instagram post:

@JonathanClayba1 @daniel_w_owens They are going back to the table over the weekend. The offer to meet at 9am on a weekday by district staff was in bad faith - UESF leadership are classroom teachers. They can’t just leave their classrooms for this. Btw Maria Su hasn’t attended a single bargaining session herself.

@daniel_w_owens Why won’t they go back to the table and try and work this out? Refusing to negotiate does not signal apprehension about striking.

We are at an interesting point in computing where companies should be hiring DevRel as an internal facing role to help their own developers adopt good ai practices.

Now that I've been through being a kid, growing up, and then having kids, it's clear that the main thing that differentiates people is simply whether they make an effort. Whether they're content to drift along with the current, or whether they try to swim.

@ccarella @interaction I’m really surprised at how effectively it identifies the only emails that actually matter in my inbox. I get so much junk because but it just cuts through it when there’s something actually important and time sensitive which is great

@bcherry @interaction But yea the most useful thing is when it tells me I have an email from my daughter’s school, especially now that I have a separate work machine and accounts and don’t check my personal email as well.

You don’t need to have a definitive opinion on OpenClaw after 1 week (let alone the 1 day hot takes). I have been using Poke by @interaction for months. It takes a long time to find extremely helpful use cases with longevity that are more than just a quick sugar high.

This is absolutely shameful. Agents of a federal agency unnecessarily escalating, and then executing a defenseless citizen whose offense appears to be using his cell phone camera. Every person regardless of political affiliation should be denouncing this.

@shayneparlo But seriously I’m surprised we haven’t seen any TDD vibecoding tools. They’re always one prompt to a whole app, but they should refine requirements through discussion then write a whole acceptance test suite collaboratively then break it down into milestones and go off and build

Coding agents are great, but with good tests they're an order of magnitude better. Starting to think that a good balance of code writing -> vibing is just start w/ tests then let Codex take the wheel for however long it takes (sometimes long).
