@bcognoscenti I wouldn’t quantify it in that way, however, I would have networked/grew up with kids with a level a wealth few people with my socioeconomic background can access. My education would have been challenging and rigorous. It would have given me the safety I needed to grow.

My father declined my offer to attend the prestigious boarding high school, Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. I stayed in Brooklyn and attended high school instead. That literally changed, EVERYTHING.

My favorite Earth, Wind, and Fire fact will be that that’s the band’s name because Maurice White didn’t have any water signs in his chart.

Yesterday was Zahara Jolie’s graduation from Spelman College, so yes, as a fan, I watched the videos hoping to spot Angelina or Zahara and fam. But after a while, I stopped looking for just their faces. I started seeing everyone else. The graduates. The families. The tears. The joy. The kind of pride that looks ancestral. There is something sacred about watching women of color cross a stage built from generations of sacrifice, brilliance, resistance, exclusion, faith, and hope. I have learned in watching these videos, that Spelman is not just a college. It is a testimony. I grew up poor. I am mixed race. Education was my ladder into a different life. I once considered Spelman, but a scholarship led me elsewhere. No regrets exactly, but watching those videos, I understood something I had only admired from a distance. The sisterhood is breathtaking. Angelina Jolie has helped me discover a love for opera, art, punk music, and even the humanitarian work that shaped my career. Through Zahara, I can add Spelman to that list. Congratulations to the Spelman College Class of 2026. Thank you for loaning me a little of your inspiration. I’ll post a few videos below. Lauryn Carter was in sixth grade when she lost her mother to cancer. By eighth grade, she set her sights on Georgia Tech — even though the schools in Americus, Georgia, didn’t offer much engineering curriculum. On Friday — with the aid of a Tech Promise scholarship — she will graduate debt-free as a first-generation college student with a degree in industrial systems and engineering. At the end of the ceremony, Lauryn will turn a special tassel that features a picture of her and her mother, whom she says has been with her every step of the way. After graduation, she’s headed to Texas to work for @pepsi. #WeCanDoThat #GT26 💪🎓💛🐝
