When eighteen strike supporters were summoned to court over rent arrears in November, shipyard workers on the Clyde threatened to walk out. The government was fighting a war with ships built on that river. The calculation changed overnight. Within weeks, Parliament passed the Rent and Mortgage Interest Restriction Act 1915, freezing rents at pre-war levels across the entire United Kingdom. Not just Glasgow. Not just Scotland. The entire country. A grassroots campaign organised in tenement closes, run by women without political representation, sustained by bells and whistles and the willingness to stand in a doorway, had produced a piece of national legislation in a matter of weeks. Mary Barbour went on to become one of Glasgow's first female councillors in 1920, the year women could finally stand for local office. She campaigned for public washhouses, nurseries, and birth control clinics, the same practical attention to the material conditions of working-class life that had shaped the rent strike. She served on Glasgow council for over twenty years. There is a statue of her in Govan now, near the streets where the strike was organised. She stands in bronze with her arms raised, surrounded by the women and children of the community she defended. The landlords of 1915 thought they were dealing with powerless women. They were dealing with an army. It just hadn't put on its uniform yet.

In the autumn of 1915, if you were a bailiff in Glasgow with an eviction order in your pocket, you had a problem. The problem was not the paperwork. The paperwork was fine. The problem was what happened when you arrived at the address. The door might be answered by the woman you had come to evict. It might also be answered by thirty of her neighbours, who had been waiting for you, who had been summoned by a bell or a whistle before you reached the end of the street, and who had absolutely no intention of letting you in. This was Mary Barbour's army. It had no uniforms, no funding, no formal structure, and no connection to any political party or trade union. It had something more useful than any of those things: a network of women who had agreed, in advance, to show up. To understand how it came to exist, you have to understand what Glasgow's working-class women were living through in 1915. The war had transformed the city. Men had left for the front in their thousands, and in their place came workers, flooding into Glasgow for the munitions factories and the shipyards on the Clyde. The population swelled. Housing was already scarce. Landlords looked at the shortage and the demand and made a calculation that had nothing to do with patriotism and everything to do with profit. Rents went up. In some cases, significantly up. And the tenants least able to resist were the ones most systematically targeted: the wives and mothers of men currently fighting in France, women managing households alone on reduced incomes, without votes, without union membership, without any of the formal mechanisms through which working men could apply pressure. The landlords had misread their tenants entirely. Mary Barbour was a rent collector's daughter from Govan who understood both sides of the housing relationship and had spent years involved in cooperative and labour politics. She understood organising. She understood what a community could do when it decided to act as one. And she understood, with a clarity that the landlords and the government would come to share rather suddenly, that the women of Glasgow's working-class tenements were not isolated individuals. They were neighbours. They talked to each other every day, across closes and back courts and communal washhouses, in the dense social fabric of tenement life that middle-class observers rarely bothered to look at carefully. Barbour and her colleagues in the Glasgow Women's Housing Association turned that fabric into infrastructure. The system was straightforward and brutally effective. Women watched for bailiffs. When one was spotted, the alarm went out, by bell, by whistle, by word of mouth moving fast through a close and into the street. By the time the bailiff reached the door, the crowd was already there. Neighbours, friends, women from the next street who had agreed to come when summoned, all of them understanding that their turn might be next and that the only protection available to any of them was the protection they provided each other. The bailiffs found themselves facing not a single frightened woman but a organised community defence that made eviction practically impossible to carry out. Some brought flour to throw. Some brought other things. Most brought themselves and their willingness to stand in a doorway for as long as it took. The combination of numbers, noise, and absolute determination made the eviction orders effectively unenforceable in large parts of the city. The strike spread. By November 1915, an estimated 25,000 tenants across Glasgow had stopped paying their rent. The Glasgow Women's Housing Association coordinated across neighbourhoods, shared tactics, and kept the pressure organised rather than letting it dissipate into individual acts of resistance that could be isolated and defeated one by one. © BBC #archaeohistories

i often have mixed feelings about attack adds, but, in this case, this is 100% the way to go for one reason and one reason alone: in a collins vs. platner race, collins would run an ad just like this one and then she would win. that's literally all she would have to do.

Russia built a new secret assassination unit after GRU Unit 29155 was burned across Europe. Center 795 was designed to be harder to trace, more autonomous, able to do from battlefield sabotage in Ukraine to killing abroad. It was compromised by Google Translate, The Insider. 1/

Steve Jobs was diagnosed in 2003 with what was basically the only curable form of pancreatic cancer that there is. They were fortunate to catch it early. But Jobs declined the surgery, insisting instead on alternative medicine. He eventually realized he was wrong, but too late. Yet another casualty of eccentrics with big egos thinking that *they* know better than the doctors. You can read about it in the Walter Isaacson biography on Jobs.

Not a Good Jewish Girl✡️
Not a Good Jewish Girl✡️@estherzelda0514·
Warning, long post re: Sde Teiman. The worst part about this whole debacle is that it really did not need to happen. That there have been credible reports of impermissible uses of force against prisoners at Sde Teiman is not controversial. Indeed, it's rare to the point of impossibility that there has ever be a war in which several incidents of human rights violations occurred against POWs or arrestees in military prisons. And such things should be investigated and prosecuted, but often are not. But what happened here is the result of antisemitic libel, and yet another example of how the toxic international discourse when it comes to Israel harms not only Jews and Israelis, but also Palestinians. Namely, one of the biggest fights after October 7th was the extent to which rape was utilized by Hamas and other terrorists. As evidence of widespread dehumanization and sexual violence against captives mounted, there was an equal pressure to create and disseminate "evidence" that Israelis were just as guilty, if not more so, of endemic rape. This largely took the form of all sorts of strange viral threads about the incidence of pedophilia in Israel proper, and other conspiracy theories, until this story hit with the impact of an atomic bomb. Unfortunately, the video that was leaked? Does not show any rape. You can view it for yourself. The soldiers drag a prisoner behind their riot shields in front of dozens of other inmates. The narration overlaid creates the rape by implication, commenting that the soldiers are “seemingly aware of the security cameras,” and they take the prisoner off screen to “try to conceal their actions with shields.” That the case was dropped is not surprising. There is just not evidence of the sexual abuse of detainees. Of course, lost in all of this is any sort of nuance. What actually goes on at Sde Teiman? Was abuse of prisoners during the Gaza War endemic? Were allegations of humanitarian violations insufficiently prosecuted and investigated on the orders of Netanyahu's cabinet? That will never be known, because of how this whole episode was overly politicized by day one to create a counter-narrative, not the truth. Namely, the manipulation and leak of the footage on Channel 12, famously opposed to Netanyahu, was meant to undermine his domestic support. And the people that took up and disseminated the footage outside of Israel did so to counter the credible and very substantiated allegations of endemic rape of the victims and captives of October 7. Note that none of this narrative-making did anything positive for Palestinians. Nobody neutral is seriously investigating reports of abuses at Sde Teiman. Everyone is mad about things that did not happen, for reasons that have nothing to do with the dignity and rights of Palestinian, and everything to do with antisemitic libel, and how seductive it is on an international stage. The press itself really should be completely ashamed of how it had conducted itself throughout this entire war, and the rape story at Sde Teiman is merely another exhibit in a long history of how their reporting has done nothing at all other than make peace even more impossible.

Right wing forces infiltrated Black spaces through sports and hip-hop. Every election cycle there’s a new “character” tasked with the job of sowing doubt and animosity towards the political process among younger Black men. I’m not here to tell you who to vote for, all I’ll say is that this trick worked and you all see the consequences: Black history being ripped out of history books and museums, targeted firings of Black people in government jobs, skyrocketing Black unemployment, grants and funds for Black people destroying under anti-DEI initiatives. We have to push back on these clowns who are paid to sabotage our community.

What is this phenomenon with Trump and russia? Spain simply didn't want to it's territory to be used as staging ground in this war and Trump wanted to embargo Spain Ukraine is openly saying that it can help, and does help and Zelenskyy is being forced by Trump into concessions so russia can have its way. Russia aids Iran, and Trump is easing sanctions on it. Is it forbidden love or something?

KILMEADE: You think Putin is helping Iran? TRUMP: I think he might be helping them a little bit, yeah. And he probably thinks we're helping Ukraine, right? KILMEADE: And you are, right? TRUMP: Yeah, we're helping them also, and so he says that, and China would say the same thing. It's like, hey, they do it and we do it, in all fairness
