I am deeply saddened to share the news of my brother Doug McCain’s sudden passing. He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life. He brought humor, fun and great conversation to every room. I will cherish our memories together. Our prayers are with his wife Ashley and children Caroline and Shepp.
McCain Institute@McCainInstitute

We extend our condolences to the McCain family following the passing of Douglas “Doug” Shepp McCain, the eldest son of John McCain. A Navy pilot like his father, Doug will be remembered as a patriot and friend to the many alumni of Sen. McCain’s Institute, campaigns & Senate staff.

Reading the favorite books of your favorite authors is the quickest path to becoming well-read. As a teen I set out to read the works that inspired Lewis & Tolkien, which is how I fell in love with The Faerie Queene, the Arabian Nights, Sir Gawain & the Green Knight and a dozen others. As an artist you have a sacred mission to pass down works you love that are in danger of being forgotten, keeping them alive for the next generation. This is how the great tradition is handed on from one age to the next.

I’ve spent the last two days reading this 399 page masterpiece, so I can cite it in a footnote for an essay I'm writing. Oh, if only X had let me know sooner what a chump I am.

There’s some who disdain Tennyson’s Idylls of the King; recently the great Amit Majmudar condemned it as a fatal bore. I don’t understand why. I still find it vivid and original, full of charm and poignancy from beginning to end.

@Veritaserum44 It's good that it did. It's a sign that gay men are interested in our masculine development, our maturing into adult men, if you will, at a time when the alphabetized movement seems to be sidelining us.

As a gay man in his 30s, I’ve noticed something about myself: the older I get, the more masculine and the more homosexual I become.

A 19-year-old Oxford student in 1900 would have read: — Homer — Virgil — Thucydides — Xenophon — Plato — Aristotle — Sophocles — Horace — Tacitus — Cicero Likely in the original Greek or Latin. Today, many elite graduates struggle to finish a book they weren’t assigned. Why did schools abandon the classics?

Am aboard the Pequod ( for the 4th time I think) Moby Dick the second greatest novel ever written and a whole universe of writing to live in .. As an antidote to the flat- footed prose of the media, trailing their stale opinions behind them and the fanatical drivel of the powerful plus the smug certainties of billionaires, rich only in money, nothing beats the great masters of writing. They are our life support, our thread of humanity in a mechanical world . AI will never produce a Melville for there is no data set that could have predicted him.

The wonderful Robert Fagles translations of The Iliad and The Odyssey have audiobook narrations by Derek Jacobi and Ian McKellen and listening to them is every bit as great as you'd think it would be.
