I wrote a short story about John W. Campbell (1910-1971), the long-time editor of Astounding magazine, who also wrote the novella “Who Goes There?” that was adapted to film as The Thing. apocalypse-confidential.com/the-thing-behi…

Using the word “metaphysics” in a way Theophrastus would not have recognized is a tell.

It is always a danger to aspirants on the path when they begin to believe and act as if the ten thousand idiots who so long ruled and lived inside have all packed their bags and skipped town or died. –– Hafiz

It is a stupid conceit that business leaders should try to predict the future uses and effects of technologies they develop, as if they were prophets. Such predictions help no one. They should simply develop and offer the best products they can.

My article on open LLMs. For LLMs, “open” means two different things: access to the weights and access to the code and data to produce them. The first is booming. The second is disappearing. That distinction may shape AI’s future. theblaze.com/tech/open-sour…

Marc Andreessen (@pmarca) will co-lead a Federal Reserve task force focused on productivity, jobs, and AI’s economic impact. The group is meant to advise on how AI and other technologies should factor into Fed policy judgments, including implications for interest rates and inflation. Andreessen is joining as an outside adviser helping lead the discussion on how AI affects work, productivity, and monetary policy. The Fed is treating AI as potentially disinflationary through productivity gains, so Andreessen’s role is to help shape that analysis from an industry perspective.

“The problem of an eidos in history, hence, arises only when a Christian transcendental fulfillment becomes immanentized. Such an immanentist hypostasis of the eschaton, however, is a theoretical fallacy.” –– Eric Voegelin, The New Science of Politics (1952)

The fact that Ellul saw this as pathology does not make it so. One can hold that he was wrong.
Michael Nayna@MikeNayna

@pmarca One of Jacques Ellul’s core ideas is that technique solves one class of problems only to create new domains that require further technical intervention. It’s funny to see a positive technofuturist take on what Ellul saw as a defining pathology of technological society.
