We were told NIH funding cuts were about eliminating DEI. But the data now shows grants are down across nearly every field of medicine: cancer, diabetes, mental health, brain disorders. With the greatest cuts hitting Alzheimer’s research, down more than 50%.

Here is the "effective payline" for each institute, estimated (by Claude) as the percentile where one can expect 80% probability of funding from a logistic regression fit. The effective payline has gone from a historic ~12% to 6% in 2025.

NIH has issued ~65% fewer (796 vs. 2300) new grants so far this year compared to the same point in prior years. Combined with the delayed release of already-appropriated funding and we are witnessing unbelievable real-time damage to the U.S. scientific enterprise.

It was (past tense) the most family friendly airline and great for business travellers who needed the flexibility in flight changes without penalties or loosing “priority boarding”. Now, it’s none of that and even A-list, Rapid Rewards & Loyal PAX are cringing at the massive overhaul to an airline that flew 50+yrs successfully for being unique.

A few months ago, @SouthwestAir, though more expensive than other U.S. carriers, was known for good baggage policy, family seating, customer service, and flight routes. Now all upside has gone away w/o reduction in price. What is remaining value proposition to customers?

@marcthiessen @SouthwestAir Same. I’ve been A-List preferred, companion pass holder, credit card holder for years, & travel @SouthwestAir for work multiple times per month. It used to be great. Better than competitors in several areas. Sad that it’s over. It’s not convenient or cost effective now.

Has anyone else noticed that @SouthwestAir fares have gone through the roof since the boarding changes? I’m A-list preferred, multiple credit card holder, loyal customer for years. But unless you are traveling with someone on a companion pass there’s literally no reason to fly them anymore.
