🎱 The IEEE working group on ML number formats has published an interim report on FP8 & is asking for initial community feedback! github.com/P3109/Public/t… tl;dr: - formally "binary8p{p}", following previous ieee formats - any {p} is defined, but binary8p3 (E5M2), binary8p4 (E4M3), and binary8p5 (E3M4) are specifically called out - 0b1000_0000 is the only nan (usually is negative zero) - 0bX111_1111 are now +/- inf - the other 253 values are defined as usual, including subnormals - exponent bias is 2^e, one higher than usual, to allow lossless casts to FP16 These choices have thoughtful rationales (see the PDF), and make it different from any of the several conflicting silicon implementations I've seen published. This is not yet a standard - see email in the pdf for feedback (or dm and I'll pass it along).
