I am starting a series this winter on relationships and measurement. I call it 'Conversations that Count'. Let me know if it resonates! open.substack.com/pub/becasandu/…

I think most of us have *5 cores + 5 reserves + weak ties* to help us navigate life’s difficulties. It’s a hypothesis. I have been testing it with colleagues & friends in the field. Tune into Conversations that Count to hear what they said...becasandu.substack.com/p/55weak-ties

From talking about relationships to measuring them If you only sign up to one thing this week, make it @becasandu's excellent blog series on measuring relationships 👇 We've been lucky enough to have a sneak preview & the findings are a treasure trove 🪙👏

Telling people what to do has become ubiquitous in responding to need. Aristotle’s philosophy counters that. He says that our close people act as our *mirror* into which we look to see ourselves. No fixing, ‘just’ looking at each other. #ConversationsThatCount
Ratio Talks@ratiotalks

Aristotle's taxonomy of relationships -for pleasure, utility and goodness alone- still resonates today. @becasandu goes back to the ancient Greek philosophy to understand relationships. Tune in! open.substack.com/pub/becasandu/…

Inspired by @ProfDonnaHall ❤️ start with a clear purpose be courageous take risks trust residents invest in the real support (family, friends) relinquish top power reimagine not fix think beyond money stay in the boat when it gets rocky be patient keep coming back to purpose.
Ratio Talks@ratiotalks

The penultimate episode of Ratio Talks on #community power brings former Chief Executive of @WiganCouncil @ProfDonnaHall who exudes the idea that leadership comes from a deep connection to people, not a title. @pstamber ratio.org.uk/rtalks/donna-h…

If a university heavily teaches undergrad quants in SPSS, and you would like to introduce R. Would you teach quants in 1) both and gradually phase out SPSS, 2) keep both, 3) continue with SPSS only, 4) discontinue SPSS for R. Will appreciate some thoughts.

Older people spoken to in truly condescending ways with their own names replaced with 'lovey', 'sweetheart' 'my darling' and always at elevated volume for the whole ward to hear - like how some British people speak English to foreigners. It eats away at people.

At the start of January my mum collapsed. Neighbours called an ambulance, which arrived relatively quickly & she was taken to A&E where she spent the next 27 hours on a trolley in a corridor before being moved to a ward. She had had a minor stroke.

A rare paper on the need for a democratic (X technocratic) approach - reforming policy via community power- to health improvement where policy & practice recommendations are not wishful thinking but ideas -> action: Building Healthy Communities in 14 places w/1700 policies won.
Pritpal S Tamber@pstamber

This month’s @Health_Affairs includes a Policy Insight article by @dr_tonyiton, @dr_robertkross and myself on the theoretical and empirical research linking #communitypower to #healthequity, including an example from @CalEndowBHC #Parks4All healthaffairs.org/doi/full/10.13…

Work like this does not have an end; it is not a project that can be contained in one system, the public system. It is bigger than the 5% help that takes place in there. It is in the 95% of relating and support from community, neighbours, friends, family. 7/6

We can liberate ourselves to liberate the method – the evidence ▶️ relational workers break most traditional boundaries to relate to people; can we shift from framing relational working from a right/wrong Kantian approach (What should I do) to a virtues one (Who should I be?) 6/6

@pstamber It does, to some extent. Maybe we will find out more with the upcoming conversations on the new Ratio Talks series on #communitypower that you have curated!

@becasandu It needs to be more strategic and organised when taking on systems because they have a built-in resistance to change. I don’t think the ‘power’ itself changes but what changes is where and how it’s used. Does that make sense?

What is the connection between #communitypower and struggle, @pstamber? If there is no fighting with another body who holds power, but people work on things that matter to them, is that still community power?
Pritpal S Tamber@pstamber

Dear Algorithm, I’ve produced a podcast series on #communitypower with the good folks at @RatioTalks. The 1st one is a discussion between Michael Little, a co-founder of Ratio, and myself: ratio.org.uk/rtalks/pritpal… It’d be great if you could let a few people see this tweet. Ta
