It’s an incredible feeling for a writer to see their name in print for the first time! Like a lot of journalists, I got laid off this year, and the media job market is pretty apocalyptic, so you’ve got to celebrate wins where you can. "Words by Timothy Beck Werth" in @GearPatrol

Hello Steve, nice to meet you! I like to live close to museums! And I go a lot. My main museum is the Met. They have a new Raphael exhibit I'm seeing Friday. Members' preview days! I visit the Met about every 6 weeks (I'm a member!). I'm also a big MoMA, Whitney, and Frick fan.

@HistoryBoomer I’ve never met a single person in my life of almost 80 years that said I like to live close to museums.

@emmma_camp_ Honestly yes: it’s Bo Burnham’s Fault “Inside” special, with Eddingyon as a close second (yes, second). Burnham is discounted too often. It’s a perfect special, full of pathos, whereas Eddington has its flaws.

Question for the group: has there been any great art about Covid? Any incredible literary novels or films? I can't think of anything off the top of my head but my cultural knowledge is not limitless.

@stormrobinson Worry about your own life? Seems like you’ve spent way too much time imagining the hypothetical psychosexual nature of a strangers marriage based on one goofy photo, which is so cringy. We’re all sinners.

Let me break down what’s going on here. He’s a deeply repressed homosexual (note the open-mouth smile) and entered the marriage with zero heterosexual experience because the idea of sex with men terrified him (or was forbidden by religion, family, culture). Sex with his wife is therefore either mechanically dutiful or outright aversive. When she’s enthusiastic or skilled, it highlights the mismatch: she knows what good sex feels like; he doesn’t and never will in this arrangement. That gap feels like a personal failure, so he holds her (very normal) premarital sex life over her head as a moral failure. Slut-shaming her restores the hierarchy he needs to feel like the “good” one. She’s the dirty one, he’s the pure, long-suffering husband who’s “sacrificing” for the marriage. It also conveniently excuses why he’s often disinterested or performs poorly in bed. It’s her fault. “She’s too used up” instead of “I’m gay.”

My wife was formerly promiscuous. I was a virgin. She was then radically born-again. Committed to church, evangelized constantly, Puritan books in her bedroom, prayer journals, grief over past sexual sin, etc. We got to know each other well for over a year, dated for four months, engaged for two and a half, and didn't sin sexually with one another. Our first kiss with each other was at the altar on our wedding day (reaction pic attached!). We've been married for over five years now, and she's been the most wonderful and godly wife, mother to our three children, and homemaker you could imagine. She's more pure than most virgins, as biblical purity has less to with past sins (though they certainly matter) and more to do with one's current posture of the heart and daily decisions to honor the Lord (Matt. 5:8). We're far too quick to forget the story of the woman labeled as a known "sinner" (likely a prostitute) in Luke 7:36-50 who was washing Jesus' feet with her tears while kissing them too. The Pharisees were shocked that Jesus let a public sinner do this. Jesus responded with a parable about debts being forgiven and ended with this powerful conclusion: "Her many sins have been forgiven; that’s why she loved much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little" (Luke 7:47). Everyone seems to highlight the benefits of virginity, and it certainly is a blessing. But we forget to highlight the benefits of being forgiven much as well. My wife knows the depths of Jesus' forgiveness more than most people, enabling her to more easily live out a life of passionate love for her Savior. A woman or man's past sexual sin matters. But what matters far more when it comes to deciding who to marry is if the person is truly born again, if their repentance is real, if they truly have a heart for Christ, if they truly follow Jesus and obey his commands. "God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong. God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world — what is viewed as nothing — to bring to nothing what is viewed as something, so that no one may boast in his presence. It is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom from God for us — our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, — in order that, as it is written: 'Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.'" (1 Cor. 1:27-31) "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!" (2 Cor. 5:17)

I seriously need some help here. My neighbor just put up this massive metal fence right along our property line and I’m honestly pretty upset about it. It completely changed the whole feel of my driveway and now it looks like I’m pulling into some kind of industrial corridor. I had no idea this was even happening until the thing was already built. It feels like my space just got boxed in overnight. What on earth can I do in a situation like this???

Focus on news SEO? -> AI Overviews are now triggering for breaking news more often... When that happens, Top Stories drops below the AIO. Not good for news publishers covering those stories. See below.

Millennials are the elite generation because they cranked out 12-page essays the night before they were due. No ChatGPT. No Claude. Just lo-fi beats playing in the background, Black coffee at midnight, footnotes that were somehow correct, and pure delusion. Grade was an A minus. Period.

@beck_werth I’m a Mom and I’d still be annoyed if that happened to me as the passenger. I’d be more annoyed when I saw her husband was there not helping much at all but …it depends on the other kids’ ages and their neediness levels on a plane—kids can get scared, too. Prob rough for all

Took a late (twice delayed) flight home to NYC. I was sitting in aisle and seated next to a mom with three kids in the back of a plane. Tell me if she was being rude. She made me get up at least five times so she could go do something for her kids. I was working on two devices, so very annoying, but I’m polite by default. By the fifth or sixth time I was frustrated, but she’s a mom, what can you do? Here’s the crazy part: when we deplaned, I realized her husband was sitting with the kids the whole time! Was she being rude? Was I too nice? Airlines need to take better steps to keep families together on planes. But, and, your 10 year old son should be able to go without his mommy for an hour, right?
