#NESOutageAlert January 25 2pm Freezing rain and ice have caused significant damage across the NES service area. Our lineworkers are operating in continuous rotations on extended 14–16-hour shifts to restore power as quickly as possible. About 220,000 customers are currently without power. At least 40 broken poles have been reported so far. More than 70 distribution circuits are in the process of being restored. Do NOT call 911 to report a power outage—we need to keep those lines open for emergencies. DO call 911 if you see a downed power line. Always assume downed lines are live and dangerous. How to Report an Outage: Text: OUT to 637797 (NESPWR) from the phone number linked to your account) Call: (615) 234-0000. Thank you for your patience as our crews and mutual aid partners work through these tough conditions.

@ZachWLambert Cultural critique: satire, commentary, offensive political jokes…Protected. Slander: knowingly spreading damaging falsehoods. Not protected.

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has been suspended indefinitely by ABC after remarks he made about how some members of the MAGA movement have responded to the fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. This is SO much more than a late-night host losing his job. It strikes at the heart of free speech, corporate power, and the dangerous ways political pressure can silence dissenting voices. Late-night monologues have always been a place for cultural critique, often through satire. That’s literally the job description. If comedians can’t point out hypocrisy or speak truth to power without fear of being fired, we lose one of the few public spaces where uncomfortable truths can be named out loud. The real red flag here is why ABC acted so quickly. Nexstar Media Group, which owns or operates dozens of ABC affiliates, publicly demanded Kimmel’s removal, calling his words “offensive and insensitive.” Even more alarming, FCC Chair Brendan Carr hinted that the government might penalize networks that don’t crack down on this kind of speech. This is where it moves beyond a personnel issue and into dangerous territory: a government official pressuring a private network to punish a critic of a political movement. That’s a chilling precedent in a democracy. When a powerful media company caves to political outrage, it emboldens bad-faith actors who want to weaponize public opinion to silence opposition. Today it’s Jimmy Kimmel. Tomorrow it will be journalists, pastors, or activists speaking up about injustice. When fear of losing your platform or your livelihood keeps people from telling the truth, we all lose. This isn’t ultimately about whether you like Kimmel or agree with his politics; it’s about whether we’re willing to protect the fragile, sacred space of public discourse—even when it gets messy, uncomfortable, or offensive. If we give that up, we’re losing one of the fundamental freedoms that allows us to live out our faith, advocate for justice, and hold the powerful accountable.

Decent 1 hour rain estimates from Spring Hill to Bethesda to Arno and the 31A/41A split (Horton Hwy). This map should start losing some of the reds over the next hour. ^al

@WVLTWill @wvlt Lots of people in Nashville who regularly travel to the area are wondering if we should cancel plans to head that way this weekend? (What would be more helpful to local govt and economy? Come visit or stay home?)

A very different view of Wears Valley today. Officials say Thursday is still a very high fire danger and officials say this could fuel this fire but, it’s not expected to be anything like yesterday. Officials say they expect a containment percentage to be called today. @wvlt

JPMorgan has a devastating piece arguing that infection rates have declined — not increased — in states where lockdowns have ended, “even after allowing for an appropriate measurement lag.” (Kolonavic) (1/x)

@Alyn “Now, new findings, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, suggest that neither surgical nor cloth masks are at all effective in stopping the spread of SARS-CoV-2.” (So basically, unless you’re one of the lucky people who have an N-95 mask, it may be futile..🤷‍♀️)

I left the house today for the first time since quarantine started. Took 7 weeks worth of cardboard boxes to the recycling center. On the way home stopped at Publix for a few supplies. 80/20 ratio of masks/no masks. Serious question: what’s the argument for not wearing a mask?

Congress should all be placed on unemployment benefits and receive NO salary until this pandemic ends. They are non-essential "workers" and aren't even doing their jobs. Do you agree?
