@shiraeis Mind sharing a few papers/studies to get started on this? Want to try to figure out my own objective function in the interim, but I'm more so curious about the impact of speech/music cutting through a general sea of background noise

Baby neuroscience is a weird fixation of mine because it reads A LOT like ML. "Babies are statistical learners" is only kinda true the way "LLMs are next-token predictors" is only kinda true, technically correct but conceptually evasive. It’s true infants track regularities in speech and vision, but what they're actually doing is way closer to an embodied multimodal self-supervised learner building predictive world models in real time. To call it “statistical learning” implies passively absorbing frequencies, and that couldn’t be underselling it more. Babies preferentially attend to high-surprisal inputs. They learn more from violated expectations than confirmed ones. There's research showing they can distinguish informative evidence from uninformative evidence (which is low key crazy if you think about how young some of these research subjects are). Their curriculum is automatically staged by their own sensorimotor development, meaning they literally can't access certain inputs until their motor system unlocks them (which is quite honestly a better curriculum schedule than most ML papers manage to design lol). Finally, sleep appears to function as an offline consolidation and generalization pass. By this point you should get that calling this statistical learning is a lot like calling GPT-4 a calculator for text. It's technically defensible and yet communicates next to nothing about what's actually interesting here: pre-training a wetware foundation model with active learning, curriculum scheduling, experience replay, and extremely noisy reward signal from adults who are still figuring out their own objective functions.

Cannes, we're hosting again. If you were in Cannes last year or Buenos Aires you know what these nights turn into. One of the teams from that dinner liked it enough to cohost this one with us, again. Announcing soon. Private dinner, curated room, the kind of conversations you actually remember three months later. If you're around for Cannes, DM me.

It's bittersweet to share that this is my last day at Figment Capital. It’s hard to put into words what this experience has meant to me. FigCap gave me my shot. Over the last four years, I’ve been lucky to learn from my incredible partners and to get to work with founders I respect deeply. The experience has shaped me in ways I’ll carry with me for a long time. More than anything, I’m leaving feeling grateful. My time here expanded my sense of what’s possible, and I’m proud to have spent these years representing the fund. I’m very excited for what’s ahead for Figment Capital and for the founders we’ve backed. Just a real thank you to everyone who made my tenure here so meaningful

If successful, this unlocks: • Instant global dollar payments • Settlement on an extremely secure chain • Lower fees and better privacy • No bridges or custodians In other words: stablecoin rails on Bitcoin.

I am stepping down from my co-ED role at the EF at the end of February 2026. Bastian Aue is taking over the co-ED role alongside Hsiao-Wei. The future is bright for builders, for Ethereum, for the EF, and for me. I wrote a longer blog post (link below). I will answer all of your questions here, at ETHDenver, and during podcasts and AMAs that will be there over the next few days. blog.ethereum.org/2026/02/13/tom…

BTC broke $70K last week, triggering cascading liquidations, and one of the most extreme put skew moves in years before bouncing back toward the 67K range. In this episode, we talk about what actually happened in the options markets, and more. ⤵ youtu.be/-DRUAPTshAc

I am capitulating, I will call Twitter "X" from now on. "Tweet" becomes a generic term for messages on any platform that prioritizes short-form text content with X-like UX, similar linguistically to "kleenex". Usage guide: * "Vitalik is only tweeting on Farcaster and Lens this year, isn't it awful how much of an ivory tower elitist he is?" * "Did you see Donald Trump's shocking new racist tweet on Truth Social?" * "Back when I sent that in 2019, it was a tweet, and by this new definition it still is, but now we can also refer to it ex-post as an X post" "Crypto Twitter" can remain as a set phrase, similarly to how Peking Duck is still called Peking Duck, though of course it would be funny if more people called it CryptoX (aka CrypTox). (This tweet was sent simultaneously on X, Farcaster and Lens via Firefly)
