More than 250,000 Belgian refugees arrived in Britain at the start of WWI. The first boats arrived on 20th August 1914, & until October, 250 - 1,500 refugees arrived every day. Local people formed committees to welcome them & provide them with food, accommodation, & clothing.

@MartinKGHI Hi Martin, we share your concerns, deeply worrying developments. On a different note: If you have a story to convey about your Belgian refugee heritage, we'd be very interested.

My grandfather's and all of my great uncles and aunts (English, Belgian and French refugees) served in WW1, and my father, uncles and aunts in WW2. Remarkably all but one lived to tell the tale. This has forged my world view. We are in a crisis right now.

In Europe, in 2025. 80 years on from the last cataclysm, we should be worried. So many parallels with the late 1930s. With the UK's democracy less affected than those of our European neighbours. But with no Roosevelt in the White House, and China and Russia posing threats

@DanielJHannan "...just as the 250,000 Belgian refugees who came here in 1914 rushed home in 1918...." And again thank you for that.

"Winter Landscape in Wales" by Valerius de Saedeleer. The Belgian landscape painter and his family were brought to Wales as refugees during the First World War by David, Gwendoline & Margaret Davies. He painted this wonderfully imagined snow scene between 1914-18. #Art #Christmas

In 1914, Queen Mary visited Alexandra Palace to view the facilities made for the Belgian refugees. Herbert Cuff, at very short notice, had made all the arrangements - he was awarded the OBE and the Order of the Crown of Belgium.

Some 250, 000 Belgian refugees were received in the UK during the war. They bolstered a workforce depleted through military enlistment. About 8, 000 settled in Glasgow - with a Belgian school & convent opened in Garnethill. Most returned to Belgium at the end of hostilities.

Thousands of Belgian refugees arrived in Ireland in the winter of 1914. I thought it might be interesting to go through newspaper archives, to see where around the country they went and how they were treated on arrival. A thread on that, for anyone interested. /1
