Let’s talk about the actual history of the Kaaba. Muslims today present the Kaaba as if it has always been the center of pure monotheistic worship since the time of Abraham. History tells a very different story. Before Islam, the Kaaba was the central shrine of Arabian paganism. By the time of Muhammad in the 6th century AD, the Kaaba housed about 360 idols, representing the tribal gods of Arabia. The chief among them was Hubal, whose statue stood inside the Kaaba. The Quraysh used divination arrows before the idol to determine fate and decisions. Other major deities associated with the Kaaba cult were al-Lat, al-Uzza, and Manat - three powerful goddesses worshipped across Arabia. These were not minor folk practices. This was the dominant religion of Mecca. Muhammad’s own tribe, the Quraysh, was the custodians of this pagan shrine. Now here is the interesting part. Many of the same rituals Muslims perform at the Kaaba today were already practiced by the pagan Arabs before Islam. The pagans: Made pilgrimage to the Kaaba. Circumambulated the Kaaba seven times. Kissed or touched the Black Stone. Ran between Safa and Marwa. Performed ritual sacrifices during pilgrimage. Entered into a sacred state during pilgrimage. Declared certain months sacred for pilgrimage. These were already established pre-Islamic pilgrimage rituals. Islam did not invent the pilgrimage system. It reformed an existing pagan pilgrimage. Even Islamic sources acknowledge this. Early historians like Ibn Ishaq and al-Tabari record that when Muhammad conquered Mecca in 630 AD, he entered the Kaaba and ordered the destruction of the idols. As the idols were smashed, he reportedly recited: “Truth has come and falsehood has vanished.” (Qur'an 17:81) In other words, the Kaaba that Muslims venerate today once functioned as the central temple of Arabian polytheism. For centuries, pagan tribes traveled there to worship their gods. Islam later cleansed the shrine of its idols and rededicated it to the worship of Allah. So historically speaking, the Kaaba did not emerge in a vacuum. It sits directly in the religious continuity of pre-Islamic Arabian paganism, with many of the same pilgrimage practices preserved and reinterpreted under Islam. This is why we criticize the kaaba activity. It is paganism.
