@jollyheretic @cornu__copia This isn't true everywhere, some Italian universities have Medicine in English too. About half of my class is us Italians, and I believe from this past fall the share only rose due to idiotic changes made to the admissions process to the Italian programs.

When I was lecturing Anthropology at Riga Stradins University there were many Iraqi and Eritrean students studying medicine. They were Swedish nationals who had been rejected from Swedish universities. Refuse to recognise medical degrees done in English from countries where English is not the language.

Hundreds or thousands of Nordic Somalis study in the Baltics and Romania because they accept everyone as medical students. East European universities are not only visa mills but degree mills for West Europeans. It's extremely difficult to get admitted here, we do not do any DEI.

@BibleExpertise @redeemed_zoomer No, the infection rate is determined by the R0. Some viruses have both high mortality & infection rates (the most famous example was smallpox). This cruise ship variant is, so far, appearing to be more infectious than previously believed.

@VenomousWilly @AmiriKing I know plenty of women who can stay calm in stressful situations (medical professions), the cop argument is more appropriate re: physical abilities when taking down suspects. Everything else the guy said is absurd.

@VenomousWilly @AmiriKing But they're not cops as far as we know. The guy fell asleep behind the wheel, drove off the road, she didn't have the seatbelt on properly (also amazing judgement) and got half ejected. The screaming was 'intense' but these two are both morons.

@RomaniaMare1918 Did they dump paint on the ground too? That capital was one of the cleanest places I've ever seen (with a draconian trash sorting system), how are they allowed to do that?

@mattyglesias Hm, if my memory serves me right, something along these lines was implemented in a bunch of countries in the 20th century. Didn't end well, did it?

But conversely, while there is nothing wrong with building a great business and becoming extraordinarily wealthy there *is* something wrong with hoarding that wealthy for personal consumption or to pass to your kids. slowboring.com/p/the-real-pro…

McDonald’s says customers are “pulling back.” Same with Wendy’s. Same with Burger King. When fast food loses traffic, it’s a stress signal. People are tapped out.

@schetenwap @transandtrad No, look at the pb&j one. “It’s not made with bread, but toast”. It’s just “correcting” an American English speaker to the German words for some reason.

Americans aren’t aware that Europeans have their own varieties of “EU English” that are riddled with errors that derive from imposing their own language’s rules onto English. Thinking that “toast” is a kind of bread rather than literally just toasted bread is a great example.
Arnold Arvidsson 🇩🇪 🕊️@ArnoldArvidsson

@PwnShop69 @coaiecrete Yes, that is toast. Why do Amerilards get so mad when we point out that toast isn't bread? lol

In Bärnau, Bavaria, in 2024 a young student architect (Julius Schönberger, 23 at the time) built a series of homes using only natural materials and with techniques handed down from Romans and medieval craftsmen. The idea was to trial methods to create contemporary homes with modern comforts using local materials and skills (the majority of the necessary labor can come from completely unskilled people). Hemp, lime, clay, wood etc. Electricity has been installed, as well as a modern pellet heater rather than fireplaces, and some of the traditional roofs have been extended to provide more space for future solar panels. The design was completely informed by the materials and the local climate, as it always was before plastics and the ideology of modernism. An interesting discovery was that the building process itself generated no garbage at all. All natural insulation easily cleared modern codes and the buildings generate less waste, pollution and CO₂ than any single part of a home built with modern materials. I am looking forward to following this project to create a method to build homes for 500 years and that break the destructive teardown and rebuild business model that is currently ruining both us and nature.

Singapore is a high trust society and doesnt have a homogenous culture. Different races and ethnic groups packed into a small space yet you can walk around at 3am drunk with cash hanging out of your pocket and a $100k watch on your wrist and no one will do anything
Lou Scott Keyes@LS_Keyes

Japan was the first time I understood what a "High Trust Society" looked like. It comes down to a homogeneous culture and people bound by a cohesive social fabric. Which doesn't exist in America.

@lydiakauppi Everybody should have a prenup that clears those things up. Now, if the other partner pays mortgage, for renos, etc. the situation is different but premarital assets and inheritance received during marriage should not be communal property.
