Call It What It Is. Gambling, Gambling, Gambling, Gambling, Gambling. Kenya has become such a fertile ground for gambling that the industry can now gather openly in Nairobi, wear suits, book conference halls, invite regulators, bring investors and call the whole thing “gaming” as if changing the name changes the damage. Let us be honest.... It is gambling, not gaming. It is Gambling, It is Gambling, It is Gambling. The language has been polished because the reality is ugly. They say gaming ecosystem because gambling economy sounds too truthful. They say innovation because addiction sounds too brutal. They say investor opportunity because saying poverty extraction would expose the whole business model. Outside these conference halls, young Kenyans are being swallowed by betting apps, Aviator traps and quick money fantasies that prey on desperation. A jobless youth does not open these apps because life is comfortable. A boda boda rider does not stake his last Sh100 because he is having fun. A student does not gamble school fees because it is entertainment. They are chasing hope in a country where work no longer pays, opportunities are scarce and poverty has been turned into a market. The most disgusting part is that this industry is not growing by accident. It is protected from the top. Three quarters of the Kenyan political class either owns, fronts for, protects or benefits from gambling companies, while the same leaders pretend to lecture young people about discipline, productivity and hard work. Even more worrying are the claims that powerful people inside security circles also have interests in these companies, which means the question becomes very simple. Who is regulating gambling when the regulators, politicians and protectors may be eating from the same table? This is why Kenyans must stop accepting the word gaming. Gaming is what children do on PlayStation. What is happening here is gambling. It is an industry built around losses, addiction and desperation, with the poor providing the money and the powerful collecting the profit. Aviator and similar games are especially dangerous because they are designed to create panic, speed, addiction and false confidence. They make people believe they are one click away from changing their lives, yet most are being slowly dragged into debt, depression, family conflict and in some tragic cases even suicide. Then the same gambling money returns to society wearing perfume. It comes back as sponsorships, donations, church contributions, campaign support, sports branding and fake empowerment. They harvest pain quietly, then return crumbs loudly with cameras rolling. Kenya does not need to celebrate gambling conferences. Kenya needs disclosure, regulation and shame. We all know know 3/4 of Kenyan politicians own betting companies in Kenya either through proxies or directly, led from the top leadership. Kenyans deserve to know which politicians own betting companies, which senior officials are hidden shareholders, which security bosses have links to the industry, which regulators are compromised and who profits every time a desperate Kenyan loses rent, school fees or food money on a betting app. Call it what it is. Gambling. Kenya is being turned into a casino, and the poor are the chips while the powerful own the table.
