💯 Lots of Warren/Hybels ministry philosophy masquerading these days as a Reformed flex. Warren profiled the guy he wanted to reach: "Saddleback Sam." Fine-tuned church to attract him. Today we see the same strategy, just different packaging. Say, Dominion Dave? Heritage Hank?
Jeff Wiesner@JeffreyPWiesner

If a cultural zeitgeist compels a preacher to substantially change the tone and emphasis of his preaching because he suspects that’s will attract more people to him… He’s an ear tickler.

Since our episcopal friends struggle to grasp this: disfellowshipping a church is not telling the congregation whom they may/may not call as a pastor. It is telling them they can't be in friendly cooperation with the SBC and contradict our cooperative standards. When this happens, they get to keep their building, land, etc., unlike what happens when a church decides not to cooperate with the blessing of same-sex unions in Anglican churches.

The Purge of Women as Pastors in the SBC Certain groups in the Southern Baptist Convention are pushing forward an amendment to prohibit women from using the title "pastor" for any ministry role—including youth, worship, or pastoral care. I explain why such a proposal is needless and concerning. open.substack.com/pub/michaelfbi…

When folks tell you they agree with you on a problem, but invest all their energy into pointing out all the weaknesses of all the proposed solutions, at some point, it becomes rather naive to keep trusting they really agree with you on the problem.

I assumed that LBJ was the most racist, misogynistic, sexually immoral Democratic icon. Until I listened to this bio of Woodrow Wilson. 👀😬 amzn.to/4vjEzw7 [affiliate]

In case you (like I) never saw a for-real $1 million check before. Super encouraging to see states back an essential project to prepare our International Learning Center for future generations. Now imagine if Mr. & Mrs. Clinton of Arkansas helped out, as they did in the 80s.

@JeffreyPWiesner What's the basis for the claim about the uniqueness of preaching? First thought: Teaching is directly attached to elder office. Not denying elders preach. But I'm sure where your argument that preaching is uniquely authoritative comes from. Related to the distinct Greek terms?

Preaching is to be distinguished from teaching at least along lines of authority. Whereas “teaching” is a one another ministry among members (Col. 3:16), for which some are especially gifted (Rom. 12:7), preaching is unique in its declarative, binding authority. The preacher enters not into dialogue with his audience, but declares, “Thus says the Lord!” With the Holy Spirit’s help, his aim to so persuade the minds of his hearers from Scripture that every conscience might be bound by God, and every will activated unto obedience—“What would God have me do?!” This is true kerygmatically, as he compels sinners to repent and believe in Christ for salvation, and didactically, that believers might “obey all that [Christ] commands.”

@danitreweek 0% chance that becomes an issue. Many of the churches pushing for this policy in Texas have women in director/coordinator roles.

Stated more mischievously: The clearest, least debatable parts of the Book of Revelation are also the most interesting, pleasant, and important parts. Appendix: Even the amillennialists ought to be able to get those parts right.
