I hate this plot device and it took a lot of fun out of both games for me. You can't enjoy the side quests when you need to be curing your terminal brain disease.
ME3 had the same issue with the active genocide. Sometimes you need to dial down the ticking clock for an RPG.

The plots of Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 both focus on objects in the protagonist's brain that are overwriting their personalities, but Cyberpunk is more fun about it because sometimes the object takes over and gets into a drunk driving accident with a stripper.
