Our economy in Sheffield hasn’t been growing as quickly as it should. One of the biggest reasons is that too many people simply haven’t had enough money left in their pockets after paying the bills. Years of rising energy costs have put real pressure on households across our city. That’s why it’s so encouraging that one of the first actions of Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s new government is to cut electricity bills by removing VAT. Putting more money back into people’s pockets will help ease the cost of living and give families the confidence to spend more in our local economy, whether that’s shopping on Fargate or The Moor, supporting the independent shops and businesses in our district centres, enjoying a pint or a meal in one of Sheffield’s fantastic pubs and cafés, visiting one of our brilliant attractions, or taking the kids out for a day this summer. When people have more money to spend, our city centre, district centres, neighbourhood high streets, hospitality businesses and visitor economy all benefit. That’s good news for residents, good news for local businesses, and good news for Sheffield’s economy as a whole.

🏳️‍🌈 16,000 people attended Kelham Pride this year - the biggest event in its history. While Reform UK controlled councils elsewhere are cutting support for Pride events and some even refusing to fly the Pride flag, Sheffield Labour will continue backing Kelham Pride and provide certainty over years to come. Kelham Pride is a celebration of everything that makes Sheffield special: a welcoming, diverse and inclusive city where everyone belongs. We’re proud to support Kelham Pride and proud to stand up for a Sheffield that welcomes everyone 🏳️‍⚧️❤️

Today we had a question at Full Council about noisy preachers in the city centre. I think Cllr Laura Moynahan summed it up really well last year. Most people just want to come into town, do a bit of shopping, meet friends or get on with their day without being shouted at through a loudspeaker that they’re going to hell. People are absolutely entitled to their beliefs and to preach them. But there’s a difference between speaking to people and using amplification equipment so loudly that it becomes a nuisance to everyone around you. At that point it’s not really about religion, it’s about noise and anti-social behaviour. The Council is right to step in when excessive noise is affecting other people’s enjoyment of the city centre and the vast majority of reasonable people in our city would support it. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Today marks the 78th anniversary of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks. In Sheffield, our steel heritage has been forged over generations by people from across the world, including many who came from the Caribbean and other parts of the former British Empire to build a new life here. Today, we remember their contribution, celebrate Caribbean culture, and recognise the lasting legacy of the Windrush generation in Sheffield and across the UK.

Everyday journeys in Sheffield are getting easier thanks to @transportgovuk, with live bus tracking now all in one place. No more switching between operator apps, it’s all in Google Maps, so you can plan ahead and see exactly where your bus is in real time. We’re also working to bring the same real time tracking to @SY_Supertram, as we prepare for the South Yorkshire People’s Network

We’re blessed to have a strong Hong Kong community in Sheffield, many forced to flee repression by the Chinese Communist Party after freedoms were stripped. Tonight they projected a message on the Town Hall in support of Jimmy Lai. We stand with them for democracy & free speech

The old Salvation Army Citadel is looking fantastic, brought to life with striking new street art 🎨 Now in council ownership, it’s been secured to protect its heritage and support regeneration. Artwork by Luke Passey, with thanks to Bridget Ingle and Friends of Sheffield City Centre

With the cost of seeing Santa now an arm and a leg, we wanted to make sure children and families in Arbourthorne and Norfolk Park still had the chance to celebrate this Christmas. Thanks to everyone who joined us at our Northern Avenue event 🎄

Big decisions to make Sheffield better. 🚃 Quicker journeys in and out of the city centre, tackling congestion and creating thriving streets. 🔌 More EV chargers. 🚸 Safer crossings in Castlegate ahead of a new park. 🚲🚶Funding schools so more children walk & cycle.

Tonight @SheffLabour Councillors joined members of Sheffield’s Jewish community, alongside Rabbi Golomb, to light the menorah in the city centre and mark Hanukkah. At a time when anti-Jewish hatred is sadly on the rise, and with the recent atrocities in Manchester and Sydney still fresh in our minds, this hatred must never be tolerated. We stand in solidarity with our Jewish communities in Sheffield and beyond, and recommit ourselves to eradicating antisemitism wherever it appears.

The M1 is closed in both directions at J36 this morning, pushing extra traffic onto the A61 (Halifax & Penistone Rd) and A6135 (Barnsley Rd). Our traffic control team in the Town Hall is working hard to keep the city moving and get people on their way nationalhighways.co.uk/m1-south-yorks…

We’re expanding charge points and helping to plan the electricity capacity to power them. More chargers mean more choice, cleaner air and easier journeys. Its all part of our plan to improve transport in Sheffield sheffield.gov.uk/news/2025/shef…

If you bring an illegal bike into our city centre, be warned — you won’t be leaving with it, and you’ll face the full force of the law. @syptweet ’s motorbike team are out in force across Sheffield city centre today, seizing illegal e-bikes that are a menace on our streets. Several riders have already been prosecuted for having no tax or insurance
